HLS: Lessons Learned and Proposed Changes HLS Formatter Team Shannon White, Pablo Santos, Dave Sharp, Tracy Hansen, Matt Moreland, Matt Volkmer, Matt Belk, Chris Collins and Scott Kennedy

Season One Lessons Learned Series of windows can be overwhelming at first, leading to “GUI Overload” PreviousHLS option occasionally misused from the Overview window Option to choose either Import or Prev on third window hard to distinguish Had underlying, serious GFE VTEC issues that affected the HLS

Needed Bug Fixes General cleanup of spelling, grammar and punctuation generated by the formatter Special handling added for Typhoons –Hyphenated storm names and typhoon impacts Corrected VTEC logic to handle HU/TR hazards shared by WFOs and NHC –Will come later this winter after OB9.2 Special GFE release

Proposed Enhancements Reorder the Watches/Warnings by significance then by coastal, inland, marine –HU.W (coastal), HI.W, HU.W (marine), etc. Allow Watches/Warnings section areal descriptions to be configurable based on whether the zone is land or marine Modify the Extratropical templates and interface wording –Final result based on Matt Belk’s presentation Only activate PreviousHLS and Previous Overview option if all VTEC actions are CON Always have Storm Information section use the latest information from the chosen TCP, regardless of whether PreviousHLS/Overview chosen

Proposed New Functionality Storm Surge and Storm Tide section wording preformatted based on surge grids –Will combine forecaster input with grid info Standardize marine zone section options –Currently have Wind, Marine and Tornadoes sections –Replace with Wind and Seas and Tornadoes and Waterspouts Use of Tornadoes and Waterspouts accounts for intracoastal and nearshore areas –Can be changed to just Waterspouts as default

Planned Future Changes Preformatted Inland Flooding wording Preformatted Wind and Seas wording –If section is approved Long-term plan to remove VTEC from HLS
