Convection vs Conduction Where is the heat energy coming from to heat this pot? What is actually happening? Is this convection or conduction? Why? Please use our red and green cards to agree/disagree.

Convection vs Conduction What is happening to the water in the pot? Show how the heat is moving. What is actually happening? Is this convection or conduction? Why? Please use our red and green cards to agree/disagree.

Are you afraid to grab the handle. Let’s vote! AfraidNot?

Were you right?

Your House So, what is going on here?

Is this what you thought, too? The radiator heats the surrounding air, which rises. As the warm air gets away from the heat source, the air cools and falls.

Where else might you see this science concept working in your world? Let’s make a list… Where would you want to sleep in the summer? The attic? The basement? What about the winter?

In my world, convection occurs… Because…. Because…

Did you think of these?

My favorite example! Who knows what this is called? DON”T ANSWER!! This is your bonus homework…find out what this is called and how it works. You have 2 days to get the scoop! If you get the scoop, you will get 5 extra points on your test! If not, .

Ok, now it’s time to prove it! We are going to do a convection lab. Don’t forget the most important lab rule… You will work with a partner and turn in one lab report per pair.

Energy Transfer Convection Lab

Materials Needed 1 square of aluminum foil 1 rubber band 1 small baby food jar ml beaker 1 sharpened pencil Hot water to fill the baby food jar Cold water to fill beaker over the baby food jar Food coloring

Procedure 1. Gather materials 2. Place 4 drops of yellow food coloring in the baby food jar. 3. Place 4 drops of blue food coloring in the beaker. 4. Come to the teacher and get your hot water for your baby food jar. 5. Place the square of aluminum foil over the top of the baby food jar and secure it with the rubber band. 6. Place the baby food jar inside the beaker and add enough cold water to cover the baby food jar with at least 2 inches of water.

Baby food jar with yellow hot water 600 ml beaker with blue cold water

7. Use your sharpened pencil to punch a small hole in the foil at the 3 o’clock position. 8. Make observations. 9. Punch another hole in the foil at the 9 o’clock position. 10. Make observations.

Wrap up You should know the following vocabulary: – Convection – Conduction – Heat energy – transfer You should understand and be able to identify: – Convection – Conduction – Radiation – Why heated material rises and cool material sinks.
