UCCCfS: Climate Change Action Plans Monday 11 th May 2009 Derek Marshall Estate Development Manager - Dundee College

About Dundee College The College plans to reform its estate and reduce the number of campus buildings from 5 to 2 has been given fresh impetus by SFC’s formal approval of ‘in principle’ funding to regenerate the Gardyne campus. This exciting project has a capital cost of £43m and will transform the learning environment for staff and students in the future.

Finance It is a condition of the grant from SFC that the project achieves a BREEAM Very Good rating for the project

What is BREEAM? “BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) is the leading and most widely used environmental assessment method for buildings. It sets the standard for best practice in sustainable design and has become the de facto measure used to describe a building's environmental performance”

BREEAM cont’d There are BREEAM schemes for a multitude of buildings including homes, courts, prisons, healthcare, industrial, offices, retail and since 2008 Education Presently BREEAM Education does not cover HE, but only Schools and Colleges Universities will require to be assessed under what is known as Bespoke

BREEAM cont’d Because the Gardyne Campus project was submitted to BRE before the Education Standard arrived last year it was assessed as Bespoke As you’d expect from an Environmental Assessment Method for Buildings, BREEAM covers many aspects Some of the Credits available though are highly relevant to UCCCfS

BREEAM cont’d The Credit headings include: Management Energy Transport Materials and Waste Pollution

BREEAM cont’d Management includes: Commissioning of Building Services Commissioning of Cold/Chilled Rooms Considerate Constructors Construction Site Impacts Providing a non-technical Users Guide

BREEAM cont’d Energy includes: Reduction in CO 2 emissions Sub-metering of substantial energy uses Sub-metering of areas External Lighting Provision of Energy Efficient White Goods

BREEAM cont’d Transport includes: Provision of Public Transport Transport CO 2 Proximity to Key Amenities Proximity to Other Amenities Cyclists Facilities Travel Plan Travel Information Space

BREEAM cont’d Materials includes: Specification of walls, roof, floor and windows Re-use of Building Structure Storage of Recyclable Waste Composting

BREEAM cont’d Pollution includes: Refrigerant GWP Insulant GWP NO x emissions of heating source Renewable and low emission energy
