 Open Source Movement  Word Processor  Spreadsheets  Presentation Software  Comparison with Microsoft’s Office

 A software that has word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and much more.  Took 20 yrs to develop  “ Designed from the start as a single piece of software- not bolted together from separate software packages.” – openoffice.edu

 Makes it easy to use  What you use in one application you can use in another  One installation program provides everything  It’s free to download  Open source has gained momentum over the past three decades through the rise of the internet

 Open office was first created in 1998 by stardivision and was labeled at birth as star office  Stardivision was bought by Sun Microsystem in 2000 in response to dominance by Microsoft's Office  Sun Microsystem then decided to rename it and it release it as a open source software in late 2000  It has increasingly became more mainstream over these past years

 Based heavily on Microsoft’s word  Has spell check and style and formatting  Can display multiple pages while a person edits  Helps create letters, faxes, agendas, and much more  Auto Complete suggest common words and phrases to complete what is being typed

 Easy to learn  Natural language formulas Ex: “Sales…Cost”  Has templates with built-in functions  Scenario manager allows “what-if” analysis. Ex: compare profitability for high/ med/ low sales forecasts.

 3D, art, special effects, animation, and high-impact drawing tools.  Easy-to-use diagramming tools  Slide show animation effects

 Dependable set of tools  Familiar to users  Microsoft makes it technologies accessible to all businesses  Limited set of productivity tools  Not very familiar  Has been described as “cumbersome” and “visually unattractive”
