EASTER

When???? Easter is called a moveable feast because the date of Easter changes every year. Easter Sunday can fall on any date from 22 March to 25 April. The reason for this variation in the date of Easter is based on the lunar calendar rather than our more well-known solar one. Easter always falls on the first Sunday following the full Moon after 21 March. If the Full Moon falls on a Sunday then Easter is the next Sunday.

Eggs Eggs used to be a forbidden food during Lent, making them a welcome return to the menu on Easter Day. The first eggs given at Easter were birds’ eggs. These eggs were painted in bright colours to give them further meaning as a gift. We still paint bird eggs today but usually only chicken eggs.

An Anglo-Saxon legend - the Easter bunny and eggs An Anglo-Saxon legend tells how the Saxon goddess Eostre found a wounded bird and transformed it into a hare, so that it could survive the Winter. The hare found it could lay eggs, so it decorated these each Spring and left them as offering to the goddess.

Easter Presents Chocolate eggs are given to children. The eggs are either hollow or have a filling, and are usually covered with brightly coloured silver paper. Around 80 million chocolate eggs are eaten each year in Britain.

Easter Egg Hunt Small chocolate eggs are hidden for the children to find on the traditional Easter Egg Hunt. In recent years this game has been linked to the Easter Bunny, which only arrived in England relatively recently.

2011 White House Easter Egg Roll On April 25, 2011, the First Family hosted 30,000 people from all 50 states in their backyard for the 133rd White House Easter Egg Roll. That year's theme was“Get Up and Go!” focused on promoting health and wellness, a central part of the First Lady’s Let’s Move! initiative to raise a healthier generation of kids.
