AO2: Language, Form and Structure Learning Objectives 1.Practice unseen poetry skills with a familiar poem 2.Understand how to structure an answer in an examination C/W27 th April 2012

Analysing & Discussing Poetry What are the most important parts of a poem’s form and structure?

AO2: Explain how language, structure and form contribute to writers’ presentation of ideas, themes and settings. This means you have to look in real detail at the words and techniques the poet uses to create the themes, the rhythm, the subject matter, the voice and the tone of the poem form. In addition, if you know what specific form of poem you are reading, you should make a point about how the poet uses that form – maybe it’s a sonnet, a villanelle, a dramatic monologue etc… The Yellow Palm Robert Minhinnick

The Yellow Palm Robert Minhinnick How does the form and structure of ‘The Yellow Palm’ emphasise the theme of conflict and its effect on ordinary lives? The Yellow Palm: Form and structure

The Yellow Palm Robert Minhinnick How does the form and structure of ‘The Yellow Palm’ emphasise the theme of conflict and its effect on ordinary lives? TIP: When writing about the rhyme scheme, or repeated ideas, explain why it is being used rather than that it is being used.

GRADES For a C grade: Explain that the first line of each stanza is repeated (to draw attention to incidents, or stress the poet’s repeated sightings of violence) Explain that ordinary scenes are followed by images of conflict Mention the last stanza Explain the rhyme scheme Use short quotations to show this For an A grade: Discuss the contrast between ordinary life and conflict, commenting on language choices. Refer to the theme change in stanza five Explain the significance of the rhyme scheme to the poem’s effect Discuss the significance of the last stanza and its message
