MAP READING Latitude and Longitude. LATITUDE  Imaginary lines running East/West  Measure North/South of the Equator (0 o )  Splits Earth into Northern/Southern.
Latitude and Longitude
Finding locations on the Earth. Latitude (parallels) imaginary lines drawn around the earth parallel to the equator definition – the distance north or.
Aim: How do we use latitude and longitude to find locations?  Topic: Unit 1  Main Idea: Latitude and Longitude.
Latitude and Longitude
Latitude and Longitude. Latitude and Longitude is one way of expressing absolute location. Houston, TX - They are imaginary lines that circle the globe.
Measuring Latitude and Longitude. Parallels of Latitude Imaginary lines that remain at an equal distance from each other Labeled in degrees North or South.

Map Coordinates Review. Equator A line that divides the planet into northern and southern hemispheres Has a measure of 0 degrees of Latitude.
 Distance measure in degrees- from 0 o to 90 o North or South of the equator  Equator- primary reference point  Lines are called parallels- form complete.
Using Latitude and Longitude.  Relative location: describing the location of a place in relation to another place.  Absolute location: exact location.
Find that place..  Find that content  Longitude, East is to the right, West is to the left of the Prime Meridian or 0 degrees  Latitude, North is going.

Mapping the Earth: Objective: To demonstrate knowledge of how to locate places on the Earth using absolute location and systems of measurement.
Hemispheres Remember, hemispheres divided the earth into 4 halves. These halves will help you in being successful at Longitude and Latitude!
Map Skills Notes.
Location To locate areas on Earth with precision, people drew a grid over maps and globes. One of the most important is the equator, which divides.

Aim: Latitude and Longitude Objective: Ability to distinguish latitude from longitude

Vocabulary Latitude Longitude Prime Meridian Equator NEWS Eastern Hemisphere Western Hemisphere

Lines of Latitude Run parallel to the equator Lines Above the equator are marked NORTH Lines below the equator are marked SOUTH

Lines of Latitude Notice how the latitude lines are labeled 20 N is not the same as 20 S

Lines of Latitude The actual North Pole is 90 N The actual South Pole is 90 S

Lines of Latitude Although the lines of latitude are all parallel The equator is the longest “line”

This example shows that if you draw an angle from the center of the earth – on can “see” how the lines of latitude were originally configured

Longitude Run North and South Only touch at the Poles The yellow line is the PRIME MERIDIAN To the left of the PM is EAST To the right of the PM is WEST

Longitude To the left of the PM is West To the right of the PM is East We live in the Western Hemisphere

Longitude Notice the equator intersects the Prime Meridian Is the pink dot on a N or S latitude Is the pink dot on a E or W longitude …and the white dot…

Longitude …and the white dot… Is it Nor S, E or W …and the purple dot

typically the latitude is given first Example: the white dot is 210N latitude and 1160E longitude Or just 210N 1160E

What are the coordinates of the Yellow dot Blue dot Red dot Green dot Purple dot Black dot

Review The longest line of latitude is ______. Lines of Latitude are _______ . Do lines of latitude ever meet? We live in the _____ hemisphere. The two ______ are divided by the _____ meridian. Where do longitudinal line intersect, if at all?
