Our Science trip to UCLAN Science Centre will take place on 22 nd January History – The children will research space travel and put it into a timeline investigating different significant events in space exploration. They will look in detail at the first man on the moon and also be following Tim Peake making history on the International Space Station. English – children will continue to be given opportunity to practice and develop their joined handwriting style every morning during registration. The children will continue to develop their understanding of the correct use of grammar and punctuation alongside weekly spelling activities and tests. During this term the children will be learning the skills of debating a topic so that they are able to take part in a reasoned argument to present their views. They will also consider the question ‘Should we go into Space?’ and present their thoughts both in writing and orally. The children will develop their reading and research skills by answering questions and researching topics linked to our theme of space using non-fiction books. They will work on two units of poetry and write their own science fiction stories. Our class novel is ’George’s Secret Key To The Universe’ by Lucy and Stephen Hawking. N.B English homework will be given out on a Thursday and should be completed and handed in by the following Wednesday. Maths – During this term we will be focusing on: Fractions and Measures. Children will learnt to compare and order fractions. They will learn to identify equivalent fractions. Y5’s will be introduced the per cent sign whilst Y6’s will learn to recall and use equivalence between fractions decimals and percentages. All children will learn to add and subtract fractions with varying degree of difficulty and Y5 and Y6 will also learn to multiply simple fractions. Children will learn to convert time and also understand and use equivalences between metric units and common imperial units such as inches, pounds and pints. They will also learn to convert between different units of metric measure – Eg kilometres to metre, hours to minutes, grams to kilograms… Children will continue to be given regular opportunity to practice multiplication and corresponding division facts and they will be encouraged to use these facts to help them with their fraction work. Y6’s will be given opportunity to try out SAT’s style maths questions related to the work we are doing in class. NB Maths homework will be given out on a Tuesday and should be completed and books handed in by the following Monday. Maths – During this term we will be focusing on: Fractions and Measures. Geography –The children will be using maps, globes and digital/computer mapping to locate countries in Europe and other countries involved in space exploration. PE – PE lessons will continue to be on Tuesdays (Net/Wall Games) and Wednesdays. (Dance with Coach Elliot from FUNDA) Art – Children will use dry and wet media to make different marks, lines, patterns and shapes within a drawing/picture. They will learn about perspective and vanishing points and will create pictures in the style of Vincent Van Gogh, Peter Max and Peter Thorpe using these skills. DT – Children will make a moon buggy toy using mechanical systems such as cams pulleys and gears. They will learn how to join axles to a chassis, how to fix a weight to the chassis, how to make a ramp and test their vehicle. French will be taught on Wednesday afternoons by Mrs McElroy. Mrs Drinkall & Mrs Kemp Computing – Children will learn how to create an animation first using paper and then using computers. They will plan and design an animation which shows a rocket taking off and blasting through space. Later in the term children will learn to use simple to send messages to each other. Science – The children will cover two science topics this term, the first is Earth and Space and the second is Forces. They will deepen their scientific knowledge and understanding through a variety of activities and investigations studying the solar system and forces and their effects on movement. We will be following Tim Peake on the International Space Station and the scientific experiments he and his fellow astronauts are carrying out in space. PSHE – Going for goals!
