3 Our Topic Our first topic in Year 2 will be London, old and new. Although primarily a history topic, with foci on The Great Fire of London and The Gun Powder plot, we will look at new and old ways of dealing with fire and how London has changed as a result. Our first enrichment visit will be to the Tower of London on the 8th of October – more details to follow.

4 English Reading: Individual reading books home every day. Reading record books completed at home and school. Guided reading in groups. Writing We will draw from events that took place in historical London as stimuli for our writing this term, such as: Instruction writing when we make bread and 17th century model houses; Recounts to experience how Samuel Pepys, the diarist, felt; Repetitive songs and Poetry such as London’s Burning and a non- chronological report writing about the Great Fire of London.

5 English Phonics / Spelling
Taught discretely daily. Built into English lessons. Handwriting Will be taught in class and continue to be a focus within books. Spelling and Written homework should also be seen as an opportunity for children to practise their spelling.

7 Science Autumn 1 - changing materials
This will link with The Great Fire of London and the materials used to build 17th century houses pre and post 1666. Autumn 2 - healthy eating. We will be baking bread (cross curricula with DT)

8 RE We will be exploring two key questions: Is everyone special? ;What makes your home special? What makes my family special? How is your family same or different from families around the world? and Should we celebrate Harvest or Christmas?; What special times do I celebrate with my family and friends and why? How do special times show what is important to me?

9 PSHE and P4C PSHE New beginnings is our theme and children will be thinking about what makes a great school or class mate and the responsibilities we need to take on board to make this happen. P4C Philosophy for children – in response to thought provoking stimuli children will create and select their own questions to discuss.

10 PE and Games There will be two sessions each week: Core skills and Games. Our games sessions will continue to be delivered by a sports specialist. REAL PE – STAFF TRAINING

11 Homework Reading 5 x a week Ask your child to :
Recap/summarise the story in chronological order Match the character to the job that they do in the story Features e.g. Point to the title, caption, subheading etc. Find one word that shows what the weather was like in the story Comprehension questions like – what does the hedgehog do in winter? Open-ended answer, e.g. ‘Why did Lucy write the letter to her grandmother? Give two reasons’ Spelling will be given out as a booklet for you to keep at home. Tests will be carried out every Tuesday. The first test will be on the sponsored spell list given before the summer break. Written homework out on a Friday and back on a Thursday Expected that all children will complete Completed to a high standard (paper can be supplied if needed)

12 Standard Attainment Tests (SATS)
READING The new reading test for Year 2 pupils will involve two separate papers: Paper 1 consists of a selection of texts totalling 400 to 700 words, with questions interspersed Paper 2 comprises a reading booklet of a selection of passages totalling 800 to 1100 words. Children will write their answers in a separate booklet The texts in the reading papers will cover a range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry, and will get progressively more difficult towards the end of the test. There will be a variety of question types.

13 Standard Attainment Tests (SATS)
SPELLING, PUNCTAUATION AND GRAMMAR Paper 1: a grammar and punctuation written task, taking approximately 20 minutes, and worth 15 marks. Children will be provided with a prompt and stimulus for a short piece of writing, with a clear text type, audience and purpose. Handwriting will be worth four per cent of the marks. Paper 2: a grammar, punctuation and vocabulary test, in two sections of around 10 minutes each (with a break between, if necessary), worth 20 marks. This will involve a mixture of selecting the right answers e.g. through multiple choice, and writing short answers. Paper 3: a 20-word spelling test taking approximately 15 minutes and worth 10 marks.

14 Standard Attainment Tests (SATS)
MATHS The new Key Stage 1 maths test will comprise two papers: Paper 1: arithmetic, worth 25 marks and taking around 15 minutes. Paper 2: mathematical fluency, problem-solving and reasoning, worth 35 marks and taking 35 minutes, with a break if necessary. There will be a variety of question types: multiple choice, matching, true/false, constrained (e.g. completing a chart or table; drawing a shape) and less constrained (e.g. where children have to show or explain their method).
