WMO activities in flood management Climate Change and River Basin Management in the Dniester Chisinau, 9-10 July 2013

WMO activities related to flood management Mission “to support countries in the integrated management of floods within the overall framework of Integrated Water Resources Management.” Associated Programme on Flood Management (APFM) Joint Initiativebetween World Meteorological Organization and Global Water Partnership Foundedin 2001 ContributorsJapan, USAID and Switzerland In-kind contribution from Japan, Germany, Italy Main activities relevant for the Dniester Field Demonstration Projects Strategic advice and capacity building

WMO activities related to flood management APFM Field Demonstration Project Status Intension for a Pilot Project, currently in the proposal phase Implementation depends on funding from USAID Field Demonstration Project on Transboundary Flood Management in the Dniester Basin in Moldova and Ukraine StakeholdersWMO through its Associated Programme on Flood Management (APFM), UNECE, Zoï Environment Network Objectives Ifacilitate the modelling and mapping of extreme flood risks; IIfoster real-time exchange of data and information, transboundary flood forecasting and early warning; IIIpromote and strengthen the use of flood information to enable the basin authorities and population to effectively respond to flood risks at different levels.

WMO activities related to flood management Partners from specialized institutes in various disciplines, that could possibly be integrated in Dniester activities. APFM’s network of Support Base Partners

WMO activities related to flood management Global Flash Flood Guidance (GFFG) Cooperative initiative to aid in reducing loss of lives due to flash floods globally. GFFG is an approach to address flash floods on a global scale with regional components. Goalto implement technologies that provide guidance for early warnings of flash in countries where no such flash flood early capacity exists, to provide a guidance tool for National Meteorological and Hydrological Service to develop flash flood warnings. CooperationWorld Meteorological Organization (WMO), U.S. Agency for International Development/Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA), U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) / National Weather Service (NWS), Hydrologic Research Center (HRC) Regional implementation since 2006, in 51 countries worldwide
