What is mass? u Mass is the amount of matter in an object u Mass is constant

MASS vs. WEIGHT

General Properties of Matter u Matter is anything that has mass and volume u Everything is made of matter

What is volume? u Volume is the amount of space taken up, or occupied, by an object

Measuring the volume of liquids u At home, you may use a measuring cup. u In science, you use a graduated cylinder.

Measuring the volume of liquids u Graduated cylinders are used to measure the liquid volume when accuracy is important.

Measuring Volume Top Image: Bottom Image: We will be using graduated cylinders to find the volume of liquids and other objects. Read the measurement based on the bottom of the meniscus or curve. When using a real cylinder, make sure you are eye-level with the level of the water. What is the volume of water in the cylinder? _____mL What is the meniscus? The curve at a liquid’s surface by which one measures the volume of the liquid.

Units for liquid volume u Liters (L) and Milliliters (mL) are used to express the volume of liquids

Measuring Solid Volume 10 cm 9 cm 8 cm We can measure the volume of regular object using the formula length x width x height. _____ X _____ X _____ = _____ LENGTH WIDTH HEIGHTHEIGHT The volume of any solid object is expressed in cubic units.  Cubic meters ( m 3 )  Cubic centimeters ( cm 3 )  The 3 in these unit symbols shows that three quantities, or dimensions, were multiplied to get the final result.

Volume of an Irregularly Shaped Solid u Water Displacement u When you put an object into water it will displace (or push up/out) some of the water. u Measuring how the water level changes is an easy and accurate method of determining the objects volume.

Measuring Solid Volume Challenge n/syllabus/unit14/new/testingmain1.htm We can measure the volume of irregular object using water displacement. Amount of H 2 O with object = ______ About of H 2 O without object = ______ Difference = Volume = ______ To find the volume of an irregular shaped object, you can’t use a ruler or the volume formula. However, you can measure the volume of a solid object by measuring the volume of water that the object displaces. Complete  in your notes

Measuring Solid Volume Challenge n/syllabus/unit14/new/testingmain1.htm We can measure the volume of irregular object using water displacement. Amount of H 2 O with object (V2) = 275 mL About of H 2 O without object (V1) = 200 mL Difference = Volume = 75 mL To find the volume of an irregular shaped object, you can’t use a ruler or the volume formula. V2 – V1 = Volume 275 mL _ 200 mL __________ 75 mL (cm3)

General Properties of Matter u Matter is anything that has mass and volume

Density is defined as mass per unit volume. It is a measure of how tightly packed and how heavy the molecules are in an object. Density is the amount of matter within a certain volume.

To find the density 1- Find the mass of the object 2- Find the volume of the object 3- Divide Density = Mass Volume D= M/V

Units for density g/cm 3 or g/mL Formula: M = mass V= volume D = density M = D x V V = M / D D = M / V
