Introduction Newport News Shipbuilding partnered with Old Dominion University to develop a draft measuring system for use on naval aircraft carriers and submarines Guidelines Economical Reduction of risk to personnel Non-permanent mounting

Ultrasonic (Principles) The ultrasonic range sensor sends a high frequency sound wave toward the water surface. The wave is then reflected back to the sensor. The distance from the sensor to the water surface is calculated based on the time of flight of the sound wave.

Electronics System

Researched hardware that met the requirements of the project Arduino micro processor development board Arduino compatible ultrasonic range sensor Arduino compatible temperature sensor Arduino compatible Bluetooth module

Past Electrical Work Tested each component for functionality with code and making adjustments Integrated all components and tested functionality

Current Electrical Work Hardwiring electronics package for final configuration Testing functionality in electronics enclosure Emphasis on functionality and durability Testing accuracy measuring from water surface Apply appropriate error corrections for: Temperature Humidity Water interactions (effects on speed of sonar and wave activity)

Future Electrical Work Functionality with LabVIEW display Functionality with user friendly interface within Arduino environment Improvements in hardwiring Transfer of protoboard to PCB User interface light code for system

LabView Interface

Current User Interface Work Develop Graphic User Interface (GUI) using ‘LabVIEW’ Finalize layout of interface LED on/off Draft Temperature Humidity Develop Bluetooth communication between Arduino processor and LabVIEW Integrate the sonic sensor data into LabVIEW

Future User Interface Work Integrate the temperature and humidity sensor into the LabVIEW program Present functional interface to shipyard liaison for user feedback

Hull Attachment and Housing

Current Work Created a 3D design of magnetic self-leveling hull attachment mounting system using Autodesk Inventor Rapidly prototyped the mounting system using the MakerBot Z18 3D printer Created a 3D design of the sensor enclosure Implemented elements to weatherproof the enclosure Installed battery and sonic sensor

Assembly

Future Work Optimize the design of the hull attachment mounting system and sensor enclosure using finite element analysis Strength Cost Production time Functionality

System Testing

Current Work Solid surface testing shows that the device is calibrated to within 1/8 th inch tolerance Gained permissions to wave basin Researched options for testing rig Rotating aluminum stand with adjustable height

Future Work Integration of humidity into calculations Testing of temperature sensor for accuracy between °F Liquid surface testing, wave motion testing, and system callibration Final testing on December 5 th

Budget Received $300 start up money from the Department of Mechanical Engineering Submitted undergraduate funding proposal of $1000 Current expenses : $236
