Current Operation: Current Operation: a fault occurs and circuit breaker trips to protect equipment Scenario: Scenario: circuit breaker fails to operate and the transmission system goes unprotected and customers ultimately lose power 4
5
Attach Attach the CBM09 to a substation circuit breaker Monitor Monitor trip signals to check for faults Relay Relay information to control house and technician 5
6
Reduce: Maintenance time Outage time Costs Provide: Operation data to technician Fault information to control house Innovation 6
7
Problem Statement, Functional Requirements, Conceptual Diagram, & Functional Diagram 7
8
Problem: Problem: difficult to diagnose problems with circuit breakers when they fail Need: Need: problems with circuit breakers need to be recognized quickly and accurately Solution: Solution: monitor circuit breaker and electronically report specific problems with it 8
9
Monitor: 1) Status of the trip coil 2) Trip signatures: Abnormal trip and slow trip 3) Re-strike of the circuit breaker 4) DC ripple 9
10
User Selectable Parameters: 5) DC voltage: 125V or 48V 6) 3 or 5 cycle trip time: Time for slow trip 7) Sensitivity: Percent difference from reference 8) Primary Current: Trigger end of wave capture 9) Record Signature: Capture initial waveform 10
11
Other requirements: 10) Store data log of breaker trip waveforms 11) Software for viewing the stored waveforms/data log 12) Communication ports capable of communicating RS-485 and RS-232 for data collection 13) Size: should not exceed 10” X 8” X 3” 14) Operational temperature range: -20°C to 85°C 11
