30 Second Expert What do I know about the AVID Critical Reading Strategies? What new knowledge or understanding have I gained from listening to my partner? Complete the left column before sharing with a partner.

A cognitive reading strategy that can be difficult to observe Less concrete Must be made visible to students Introduction to Pausing to Connect

Strong readers pause frequently when reading challenging text and... – reread important ideas – ask questions – consult reading aids – find connections among words – consider other textual details Introduction to Pausing to Connect

Model Pausing to Connect strategy first Demonstrate how long one might spend Pausing to Connect Explicitly show how Pausing to Connect strategy improves comprehension Explain how Pausing to Connect strategy can be used with all types of text How Teacher Models Pause to Connect?

Reflect on what they just read Synthesize ideas from one or more paragraphs Connect reading aids to ideas presented in text Relate ideas they have circled or underlined to surrounding text Document their connections in the margins or their notes How Should Students Pause to Connect?

To make connections while they read To make clarifications, ask questions, or investigate relationships between ideas To master the skill as they tackle more sophisticated texts Why Should Students Pause to Connect?

Refer to your Pausing to Connect Critical Reading Strategy Handout Read pages 3-5 These pages show examples of Pausing to Connect and a written assessment of students connections to the sample texts Pausing to Connect

1.Participants form pairs. 2.Analyze the graphs on the AVID Weekly handout “Gen Y: The Millenials.” 3.Locate the list of questions at the bottom right of the handout. 4.Partner A reads Question 1. 5.Pairs work together to answer the question but do not record answers. 6.Repeat the process with Partner B reading Question 2 until all five of the questions have been asked and answered. Application of Pausing to Connect

Discuss the following questions in your table group: 1.What was your experience using the Pausing to Connect strategy? 2.In what ways did the strategy help you to comprehend what you were reading? 3.How do you see this strategy benefitting students in the classroom? Debrief of Pausing to Connect

1.Form pairs 2.Locate the AVID Weekly article,“Cells reprogrammed in living mice”. 3.Partners take turns reading aloud the first 2 paragraphs. 4.After each paragraph, select a question from the list of questions found on the “Pausing and Connecting: Questions and Methods” pg. 3 (Quick Reference 6.1) 5.Work together to answer the questions but do not record your answers. 6.Keep track of questions that come to mind but are not on the list. Pausing to Connect with an Article

Discuss the following questions in your table group: What was your experience using this variation of the Pausing to Connect strategy? How else do you see this strategy being used? How might it be modified for different content areas? Debrief of Pausing to Connect with an Article

Refer to the handout titled The College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards and Critical Reading Find the Pausing to Connect strategy and review which CCRAS is covered when using this strategy. Are there other CCRAS that you imagine could also be addressed when using the Pausing to Connect strategy? Pausing to Connect and the CCRASR
