Flight Fest June 14, 2013

What is “Flight Fest?” It is similar in format to “Field Day.” All activities relate to some aspect of flying. Students will be on their best behavior! Students rotate in groups from one activity to another. (5 in all.) Students MAY ASK pilot Bill AS MANY QUESTIONS AS HE HAS TIME TO ANSWER!!! – Very few topics are off limits – he loves to talk!!

Schedule of Activities 9:20 4 th graders walk outside and will have a brief introduction and hear expectations. 9:25 – 9:45 Groups of students (next slide) go to their assigned first station. (all students will bring their gummy bear gizmos, paper airplanes, and Zoomerangs.) 9:45 – 10:05 Groups rotate as directed 10:05 – 10:25 Groups rotate as directed 10:25 – 10:45 Groups rotate as directed 10:45 – 11:05 Groups rotate to their final station. 11:05 – 11:30 Class is seated near the plane, Q & A

Station A: Paper Airplanes Paper Airplane Challenge Students will use the plane made in school – or Bring one made at home. Student groups will line up in groups of 4 Students will stand and toss their airplanes for distance (within the assigned area). After all students have tossed, winners will be announced. Teacher/leader will determine winners.

Station B: Sail Plane or Glider Captain Bill will show you where you need to sit, and explain where you cannot go. He will show you the outside and inside of the glider. NO ONE WILL BE PERMITTED TO SIT IN THE GLIDER, PLEASE DO NOT ASK. You will be given time to ask questions Remember, this is a REAL plane!

Station C: Paper Helicopter Students will receive a template and will share scissors to cut their copter out. They will follow instructions to fold it, and apply paper clips. When instructed, they will begin their competition Given time, a second copter may be created, and tested.

Station E: Zoomerangs Students will bring out their completed Zoomerangs. They will receive instructions on safety and the best ways to fly these. They will be given some practice time. The competition will proceed in a similar way to that used with the paper airplanes. No student will retrieve his or her zoomerang until instructed to do so.

Station F: Bottle Rocket Launch Students will bring their gizmos out with them. Rules for safety, sitting positions, etc will be discussed (and enforced). Students or their teams will be called to the launch pad one at a time. Gummy Bears will be given prior to launch. Spectators will use clipboards to take notes on what works best, what they liked best, and will vote on the most successful design.

Rotation Order A -> B -> C-> E -> F-> A Students are responsible to clean up, and bring all their items with them.
