British soldiers during the War of Spanish Succession

Why were England and France at war? Each State tried to overpower the other. Each State wanted to control the fur trade in North America Hudson Bay Company VS French fur traders. Each State wanted to expand their territories in North America.

Competition for Territory

War of Spanish Succession (1701-1713) In 1701, the succession of the Spanish throne triggered a war. The Treaty of Utrecht (1713) ended the war in Europe. France had to cede part of Acadia, Hudson Bay and Newfoundland to Great Britain. One of the battles in the war.

New France after the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 What has changed with the territory of New France?

How were wars fought back in the eighteenth century?

Infantry One major innovation was the flintlock musket. An average soldier could fire three rounds a minute but this required training. Problems with accuracy. Close-up of a flintlock mechanism.

Battle Tactics Ranks of soldiers. Soldiers would form rows and fire at each other; This was seen as civilized warfare. Most firefights took place at ranges between 50 and 100 yards. Ranks of soldiers.

Battle Tactics (continued) Field artillery (cannons) would also be used on the battlefield. Cavalry was also used in warfare.

War of Austrian Succession (1744-1748) This was another conflict that started in Europe. In North America the conflicts were mainly in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Seven Years’ War (1756-1763)
