Presentation transcript:

New Literacy Resource Purpose -To enable students to be responsible for accuracy in their work (and the work of peers) -To give students the skills to be able to develop ideas (vocabulary and structure) -To meet demands imposed by the new curriculum focus on SPaG

Sections in the Resource The Punctuation Jungle Includes a wide range of essential punctuation marks, such as apostrophes, with an explanation and an example. This can be used to: a)Consolidate students’ understanding of punctuation b)Enable them to check their partner’s work for accuracy c)Encourage students to use punctuation they do not normally use to develop their literacy skills.

To enable students to spell accurately and develop vocabulary The difference between break and brake Embarrass has two ‘r’s and two ‘s’s

Get students to use the acronym CUPS to: -Check their own work for errors -Check their partner’s work for errors

Explore the use of command words – particularly those found in exam questions. We can teach our students what words to expect and what skills are being tested with that word – allow them access to the higher level questions. The skills needed to evaluate are much more challenging than to outline

How do I Start…? Students often find it difficult to begin a piece of work. This helps them to vary their sentence starters and also to use more complex connectives to link their ideas and develop their analysis. It gives them the confidence to try new words and make their writing more interesting. Or use it as a peer assessment tool – where peers are suggesting other connectives that students could have used to develop writing.
