Collage Mixed Media Art

What is a collage? A piece of art made by sticking various different materials such as photographs and pieces of paper or fabric onto a backing.

Drawing or collage 2 choices this week Until more studios open, you may sit anywhere in the room. After cleanup, sit where you worked.

Henri matisse Henri was a French Artist. He was born in 1869. At first he was a painter. His mother encouraged him to try out new things and to paint his emotions. He began to paint with bright masses of colors that were freely applied. One art critic called him a “fauve” which means “wild beast”. The name stuck and his style of art was called Fauvism. Woman with a Hat

Not giving up   After surgery in 1941, Matisse was bedridden. However he continued to work from a bed in his studio. When necessary, he would draw with a pencil or charcoal attached to the end of a long pole that enabled him to reach the paper or canvas.

A Collage artist at work He made art that were cutouts of paper. Some were expressively shaped human figures cut from bright paper and pasted to a background.

Can you guess the title of this collage? The Snail

Positive & negative space When making a collage, it is just as important to look at the NEGATIVE space, as well as the POSITIVE space. In this Matisse artwork, the black and white cutouts are the positive spaces. The orange, pink, blue and green rectangles are the negative spaces.

Collages are made of a lot of pieces…

Student work This collage uses overlapping, shapes and a variety of colors.

A different self portrait

Mixed media collage These collages are made from a painted background, pyramids cut from yellow paper and the camels are black cutouts.

Only cut paper

Only torn paper

The negative space is black What a difference!

What subject do you like?

How to make a collage The backing for your collage should be heavier cardstock, tagboard or cardboard. No larger than 12 x 18. Cardboard is in the back corner. Smaller blue board is at Paper Crafts Use small scraps from the paper closet. Look for textures and patterns. Cut papers into shapes. Use the correct glue to place onto the collage. Place on drying rack.

Collage rules When using bottled glue, use a dot, not a lot. Recap glue sticks. Make sure everything is glued on securely. Don’t cut out of the middle of the paper. Please throw away scraps smaller than your thumb! No one else wants to use them. Return all supplies to the proper place.

assessment I used emphasis on one area to draw in the viewer’s eye. I used more than 3 colors. I glued all pieces carefully and the completed collage is flat and smooth. I used these techniques: Overlapping Repeating patterns Negative and Positive space
