Which is it-Evaluation or Discipline? Two Different Processes for Certificated Employees -“Non-renewal” for Remedial Teaching Deficiencies. -“Discharge” for non-remedial behavior that has a substantial adverse impact on performance or for behavior that has no legitimate professional purpose. One Process for Classified Employees

Discharge vs. Performance-Based Non-renewal Discharge requires either progressive discipline or severe single incident Discharge can occur anytime during the contract Notice must specify the reasons for the discharge

The 4-Step Observation Summary 1. Concern/Strength: Plagiarize the concern or strength from the Evaluation Criteria 2. Example: Plagiarize an example of the concern or strength from the observation notes.

The 4-Step Observation Summary 3. Importance: Give a reason why the criteria is important. 4. Suggestion: Give a suggestion for improving or continuing the performance

Summary regarding Job Performance 1. Concern: I have a concern regarding your quantity of work in a timely manner. 2. Example: For example, yesterday you failed to finalize three letters. I asked you to finalize them before the end of the day. Several times yesterday, I observed you in casual and idle conversation with co-workers. Once, you talked with a co- worker for 20 minutes about a boil you have on your buttocks. It would have only taken you about 20 minutes to finalize the three letters.

Summary regarding Job Performance 3. Importance: It is important to have a high quality of work in a timely manner because deadlines must be met and because I need to have confidence that work will get done when I ask for it. 4. Suggestion: I recommend that you perform the assigned work in a timely manner and engage in less conversation with co-workers.

Summary regarding Personal Skills 1. Concern: I have a concern about your interaction with others in the work site. 2. Example: I noticed on four different occasions yesterday that you talked with co-workers about your boil and even offered to show it to one employee. Three of those employees complained to me about your comments.

Summary regarding Personal Skills 3. Importance: It is important to have effective communication with others so that they will feel comfortable dealing with you on matters that require collaboration. 4. Suggestion: During work time, discontinue talking with others about personal problems.

Summary regarding Personal Skills 1. Strength: I noticed while working at the high school that you frequently demonstrated respect for staff and students. 2. Example: When you were working on the door to classroom 111 you were interrupted by staff and students but continued to treat each person with dignity and respect.

Summary regarding Personal Skills 3. Importance: Students who feel respected respond in kind and develop greater confidence in their ability to learn. 4. Suggestion: Keep up the positive encouragement in this area.
