Locating Information- Now that we’ve practiced spelling words accurately, we will work on finding information accurately. Good readers understand different parts of a book. Most nonfiction books are organized so that it is easy for readers to find information. Let’s look at ways we can find information in our own Student Edition. Look at the cover. Find the title. Title – Name of … A book A unit A chapter A story

Locating Information cont’d. Open to pages 4 – 9. Look at the Table of Contents. Table of contents - A list of selection titles with the page numbers. Turn to page 100 and view the heading “Music is Sound.” Heading – a title that comes before each new part of a selection. Find another heading. TTYP - Goldfish

Locating Information cont’d. Turn to page 486. Glossary – a dictionary of important words found in a book. Alphabetical order Guide words help us find where the definition for a word is located. Look at pages 498 and 499. Index of Titles and Authors Index – List of subjects Alphabetical order Page numbers Usually in the back of the book

Let’s practice locating information Where would I find on what page number Theme 5 starts? Table of Contents On what page does “The Bee” start? page 244 On what page does the Glossary begin? Page 486

What are the guide words on the page where you can find the word crop? Committee and crumpled Look at the Index of Titles and Authors. On what pages can a story by Cynthia Rylant be found? Pages 22-43

Dictionary Practice You will work with a partner and a classroom dictionary to locate different words. Look for these words: Join Noise Toy Find the guide words that appear on the top of the pages for the words and write them on the back of your paper.

Let’s check your work… I’ll let you write the answers… Join Noise Toy ________________ and ___________________ Noise ________________ and ____________________ Toy

Read aloud You will listen to a selection called “Sounds All Around.” It tells about the many types of sounds in the world. This story is nonfiction. Is nonfiction fake or real? CHORAL TTYP Why do you like to read nonfiction text? SYS like this, “I like to read nonfiction text ___________________.”

Remember we can use parts of a book to help find information. How could I locate information for this story? If I wanted to find this selection in a book, I could look at the table of contents to find the title and the page number on which the selection begins. I could also use the index and look for the selection title or for the author’s name. Since this is nonfiction text, why do you want to read “Sounds All Around”? TTYP Let’s READ!!
