4 Discuss the Theme Focus Question: What is my role at home?  Are any of your roles at home like roles we read about in You Can Count on Me?  What other books have you read that describe roles students have at home?  What have you seen other students do that tells you about their roles?

5 Build Theme Vocabulary Connections Theme Vocabulary rolescommunitydiscovered changeexplore leaderpracticed Give examples of the vocabulary words listed above. See if you can use them in a sentence.

6 Use Text Evidence  Look for key words in text and captions.  Look for photos and pictures that show something related to the key word.  Think about how the information is organized in You Can Count on Me. Sometimes you can use chapter titles or subheads to find text evidence.

7 Read Across Text PageText Evidence 6 The caption says that helping clean up is an important job at home. I will add this idea because cleaning up is a role I have at home. 7-9 After each caption ask, “Does this text feature have information hat helps you tell about your role at home? 10-11 What do you learn about your roles that helps you answer the question? Focus Question: What is my role at home?

8 Writing: Choosing a Topic Possible Topics:  helping the neighbor pull weeds  collecting food for the town’s food pantry  teaching my friend how to ride a bike  having a special role in dance class  learning from Grandma how to cook pasta

9 Voice: Helps readers know that a real person is speaking and cares about the message.  Use pronouns I, me, and my.  Use the same language they use in everyday speech.  Think about how they would talk to a friend and try to use the same voice in their writing. How is this sentence a good example of voice? I had so much fun volunteering at the zoo. I can’t wait to go again!
