The Corner Kick (17) U.S. Soccer Federation Referee Program Online Training Script: Welcome to U.S. Soccer’s online training for the Grade 9 Referee Course. Training for this course is specific to preparing officials for the small sided and recreational youth game. This presentation focuses on Law 17 – The Corner Kick. U.S. Soccer Federation Referee Program Grade 9 Referee Course Small Sided and Recreational Youth Training

Overview Crosses goal line Last touched by defender No goal is scored X Crosses goal line Last touched by defender No goal is scored *Can score directly* Online Training Script: A corner kick is a method of restarting play and is awarded to the attacking team when the ball crosses the goal line, without a goal being scored, when last touched by a player from the defending team. A goal can be scored directly from a corner kick and an attacking player cannot be offside if he or she receives the ball directly from the corner kick. Classroom Instructor Talking Points: Test questions – Tell when a CK is awarded and can you score directly from a CK?

Requirements Kick taken on side where ball went out Ball inside of corner arc Opponents 10 yards from corner arc Ball in play when it’s kicked and moves Online Training Script: A corner kick is awarded when the entire ball passes over the goal line, either on the ground or in the air, having last touched a player from the defending team when a goal has not been scored. The ball must be placed inside the corner arc and is in play when it is kicked, therefore the ball does not need to leave the corner arc to be in play. Opposing players must respect the minimum distance at a corner kick and since a corner kick can be taken from anywhere within the corner arc, opponents must be 10 yards away from the corner arc itself, regardless of where the ball is placed. Where necessary, the referee should warn any player within this distance before the corner kick is taken and caution the player if he or she subsequently fails to retreat to the correct distance. Also, the kicker may not touch the ball again until it has touched another player. Classroom Instructor Talking Points:

Concerns with Corner Kicks Small area Many players challenging In “goal scoring position” Not usually a big problem with “little kid” games Become aware as you move up Make your presence known Talk to players Deal with it before it’s a problem Online Training Script: Referees at the competitive youth level are reminded to use the same preventive officiating techniques discussed in Law 13 to avoid issuing cards whenever possible.   Some of these preventive techniques include the referee having a presence near play, being aware of the situation and the potential tactics that the teams might attempt, being proactive rather than reactive, communicating with players, both visually and/or verbally, and allowing assistant referees to help manage corner kicks when in their vicinity. Classroom Instructor Talking Points:

Infringements Double touch – IFK to opponent Retake corner kick for any other infringement Online Training Script: If, after the ball is in play, the kicker touches the ball again before it has touched another player an indirect free kick is awarded to the opposing team, to be taken from the place where the infringement occurred. In the event of any other infringement the corner kick is retaken. Classroom Instructor Talking Points:

Review Question A corner kick is awarded when the ball wholly crosses a ______ when last touched by a player from the defending team. Touch line Goal line Online Training Script: Classroom Instructor Talking Points:
