What is professionalism? A specific style of behaviour in the work place. This means that professionalism is demonstrated by our behaviour in the work place

Professionalism in the work place requires the following: Know how and achieve expected result Give appropriate feedback. Respect for self and for others and their time Positive attitude Be friendly and a team player Problem solving and perseverance Willingness to learn and volunteer for new tasks

Important attributes of professionalism in the work place: A good role model Good Time Keepers   Dresses appropriately for the role Speaks in a way which is appropriate to each different audience. Knowledgeable about the job, organization, etc. Team player 


Important attributes of professionalism in the work place: Cont. Communicate effectively Works well under pressure Meets deadlines Offer positive contributions in the official meetings Prioritises effectively Accountable and takes responsibility

Professional interaction Respect for colleagues and tolerance. Communication is key. Open to the ideas and suggestions of other colleagues/supervisors Keep personal information personal. Positive attitude.

Professional interaction cont. Email Etiquette: Use e-mail communication wisely. Start messages with formal introduction Attention to details. Avoid the use of emotional feelings and acronyms in official e-mail massage. Emphasize a point by italicizing, bolding or underline your word. Use proper punctuation and capitalization.

Professional Performance Do your work to the best of your ability. Excellence is the driving force of professionals. Put maximum efforts in getting the task done Professionals focus on the quality and quantity of the work. Accountability and personal responsibility are essential. Ethical behavior.

Professional behaviour Clear-cut divide between personal life and professional life. Respect other’s personal space. Time keeping. Abide by the office hours fixed by the organization. Communicate differences of opinion respectfully and in the appropriate behaviour.

Professional appearance Your clothing creates an image of you and your organisation. Follow the dress code specified by the organization. A dress code brings uniformity. Do not dress provocatively Refrain from using heavily scented perfume, or lotions that could bother co-workers

How is professionalism in the work place judged? Culture of the organization. Against expectations or standards By the way you communicate with others in the workplace. Job performance or conduct in general. Be part of the solution rather than the problem. Professionalism is in the eye of the beholder.
