 Claims more WOMEN”S lives than the next 6 diseases combined  EX: high blood pressure, coronary heart disease – heart attack and angina, stroke,  rheumatic fever, arrhythmias, atherosclerosis (inner walls of arteries narrow)

 When blood pressure is above 120/80  Systolic – top number = pressure when heart beats  Diastolic – bottom number = pressure when heart is at rest  Heart attacks occur when blood flow to part of heart is blocked.  Strokes occur when vessels to brain clog or rupture.

 You can change: alcohol, eating, stress, exercise, smoking  You CANNOT change: Age, gender, race, heredity

 Results when body does not adequately produce of use INSULIN, a hormone needed to convert sugars and starches to energy  Type 1 – fail to produce  Type 2 – fail to use properly – resistance – eating ourselves towards  Gestational - happens to 4% of pregnant females  pre-diabetic = high glucose levels – 4 million Americals  Symptoms: frequent urination, excessive thirst, extreme hunger, unusual weight loss, increased fatigue, irritability, blurry vision

 Eat right and exercise  Tobacco – most preventable cause of death in society  Sun – UV rays cause most skin cancers  Food and Fitness  Eat a variety – focus on plant sources = 5 a day  Eat whole grain  Limit red meat  Limit fried foods and cut saturated and trans fat  Limit alcohol  Maintain weight – exercise minutes a day
