Decisions, Decisions, Decisions You Have the Power!

What things affect the decisions you make?

Standards by which we live; you decide what is right or wrong, good or bad, important or unimportant  Life:  Family  Health  Work:  $$$$  Love your job  Cultural (ethnic and/or religious)  Special Dinners  Celebrations  Social (Community)  Environment  Friends  Demographic  Neighborhoods  Schools Values

 Change as you learn and grow.  Different people and different values result in making different choices. Values Can Change

 Goals are things that you want to accomplish in your life.  Hopes and dreams  Goals come from your values, needs, and wants. Goals

 Make a list of 10 items you don’t have but would like to have. 10 Things

 Needs are things that you can’t live without. Needs

 Wants are things that you would like to have but can live without. Wants

 Long-term goals are goals that you want to achieve over a period of years during your life span.  Includes your hopes and dreams Long-Term Goals

 Short-term goals are things you hope to accomplish within a year.  Your short-term goals serve as stepping stones to achieving your life-span goals. Short-Term Goals

 Life-span goals are long-term goals that you want to reach during your lifetime. Life-Span Goals

 S pecific  M easurable  A chievable  R ealistic  T ime Bound SMART Goals

 Your goal should have its expected outcome stated as simply and concisely as possible.  Answers questions such as;  How much?  For whom?  For what? Specific

 A measurable goal has an outcome that can be assessed and/or measured in some way. Measurable

 An achievable goal has an outcome that is attainable given the current situation, resources and time available.  Goal achievement may be more of a “stretch” if the outcome is tough or there is a weak starting position. Achievable

 A realistic goal helps maintain focus on the mission or the “bigger picture.” Realistic

 A time-bound goal includes realistic timeframes.  Sometimes timeframes are imposed. When that is the case, carefully consider what is attainable within the imposed timeframe. Time Bound
