Characters Annemarie Johansen Kirsti Johansen Mr. and Mrs. Johansen Ellen Rosen Mr. and Mrs. Rosen Uncle Henrik Peter

Setting In this book, the setting is in Copenhagen, Denmark. The year is 1943, the time of the Nazis.

Rising Action The rising action is when the soldier comes to the Johansens home, where Ellen is staying. They asked; “who’s the dark haired one?”. (The dark haired is Ellen, and she is a Jew.) This is in chapter 5.

Climax The climax in this book, is when Annemarie’s mother and uncle lie to her and Kirsti, that their aunt died. At the “funeral”, Kirsti is asleep when they open the casket to find nothing in there but blankets and old clothes. Annemarie and Ellen find out that there is no Aunt who died. The Rosens and all of the other Jews that are there go on a boat to Sweden with Uncle Henrik.

Falling Action The falling action, is in chapter 13, Run as fast as you can. Annemarie is taking lunch to Uncle Henrik, and gets caught by three German soldiers, and one has a dog. One of the German soldiers feeds his dog Henriks lunch. All that is left in there, is a hanker- chief. The dog sniffs it, and backs away, losing its sense of smell.

Resolution The resolution, is the war ended two years later, when Annemarie is 12 years old. Annemarie asked her dad if he can fix Ellen’s necklace, for when Annemarie ripped it off Ellen’s neck at her house (the Soldiers were coming). Peter died because of the German soldiers for what he did to help the Jews. Annemarie finds out what really happened to her sister Lise. She was part of the group that Peter was in. They got captured by the Germans. Both Peter and Lise escaped. Peter got away fine, but Lise didn’t. When she was running, soldiers in a car were driving, and hit Lise. Obviously they wanted to kill her, so they just ran her over.

What is science-related In this book, there is something science-related. There is something that scientists actually made in real life. It is something that you can put on a handkerchief, and Soldiers dogs smell it, they temporarily lose their sense of smell. It was specifically made to help Jews escape from the where they were going to be killed.
