Political Crime - State Crimes

Rules of War The Geneva Conventions, sets out rules that countries fighting in wars must follow. If countries break these rules, they can be arrested for war crimes, and tried in the International Criminal Court. Radovan Karadzic is currently on trial in the ICC for war crimes committed during the Bosnian War.

The Geneva Convention These are a set of agreements signed in Geneva, the most famous of which was signed in 1949.

The Geneva Convention Sick and Wounded Wounded military personnel are no longer part of fighting force. Field Hospitals Medical equipment, staff and those wounded are not to be attacked.

The Geneva Convention Today Even though war has changed massively since the conventions were signed, they are still considered the most important document when it comes to International Humanitarian Law. The USA is currently holding many suspected terrorists in conditions that break the Geneva Conventions.

Relevance? We see fewer and fewer full-scale wars in today’s world. More often, our enemies are terrorists, or small groups, rather than soldiers in uniform. Are the Geneva conventions still relevant in the 21 st Century?

“The Geneva Conventions are not relevant to the Modern World” Using your knowledge of the Geneva Conventions, do you agree with the above statement? In your answer, make sure to cover: What the Geneva Conventions are. Some of the issues they cover. Why they may not be relevant today. Your opinion of the Conventions and whether they are still important. 150 words! Homework
