Who is God?

What is he like?

Today we start talking about the Attributes of God.

Who is God? So this summer, we will be studying some characteristics of who God is. That means we will talk about what He is like. What is true of Him. So that we can get to know Him better.

Today: God is All Powerful! He is Sovereign.

What is Sovereign?

Sovereign means ‘all powerful’ and ‘the ruler’. A king of a country is called the sovereign ruler – it means that he is in charge and everything there is his.

What does the Bible say? Psalm 24:1 “The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it. The world and all its people belong to Him.”

Why is knowing this important? Knowing Him helps us know what to do when things get tough.

Why is knowing this important? Knowing Him helps us know what to do when things get tough. – Daniel 3:1-29

Why is this important? Understanding what God is like helps us to understand what He has done for us.

Why is this important? How good you think you are How good you think God is

Why is this important? How good you think you are How good you think God is God’s Grace

Why is this important? How good you think you are God How good you think God is God’s Grace

Why is this important? When we understand how Great and powerful God is, And how much we fall short, When we can understand How much He has given for Us.

What if we don’t know this? What happens if we don’t know that God is sovereign?

What if we don’t know this? What happens if we don’t know that God is sovereign? How can we depend on God to help us, or change us, or keep us going, if He is not the one ultimately in charge?

What does the Bible say? Eph 3:20 “Now glory be to God! By his mighty power at work within us, he is able to accomplish infinitely more than we would ever dare to ask or hope.”

LK 12:16-21 And [Jesus] told them this parable: "The ground of a certain rich man produced a good crop. He thought to himself, `What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’ Then he said, `This is what I'll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I'll say to myself, "You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry." “But God said to him, `You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?' "This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God."

LK 12:16-21 How would this guy have acted differently if he had realized that God was in charge?
