Parables of Jesus – Week 2 – The “Financial Parables”
Luke 7 Luke 12 Matthew 13

Today’s parables all have something to do with money
Cancelled Debt Acquired Wealth Total Liquidation

Cancelled Debt Is when a creditor forgives a debt without requiring consideration in return

Luke 7:41-43 "Two men owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 42 Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he canceled the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?" 43 Simon replied, "I

Luke 7:41-43 suppose the one who had the bigger debt canceled. "You have judged correctly," Jesus said.

Luke 7:44-50 Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered,

Luke 7:44-50 has not stopped kissing my feet. 46 You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. 47Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven--for she loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little." 48 Then Jesus said to

Luke 7:44-50 her, "Your sins are forgiven." 49 The other guests began to say among themselves, "Who is this who even forgives sins?" 50 Jesus said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace."

Psalm 103:12 as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

Things you have gained over a period of time
Acquired Wealth Things you have gained over a period of time

Luke 12:16-21 And he told them this parable: "The ground of a certain rich man produced a good crop. 17 He thought to himself, 'What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.' 18 "Then he said, 'This is what I'll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store

Luke 12:16-21 all my grain and my goods.19 And I'll say to myself, "You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry."  20 "But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from

Luke 12:16-21 you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?' 21 "This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God."

Cancelled Debt -VS- Acquired Wealth

Total Liquidation When a company going out of business is trying to sell off it’s remaining product to pay off its debts

Matthew 13:44-46 "The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. 45 "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine

Matthew 13:44-46 pearls. 46 When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.

Kingdom of Heaven Buried treasure A pearl of great value
THEY SOLD ALL THEY HAD AND BOUGHT IT!

Our investment – What we need to know
We have to liquidate ourselves for more of Jesus. The sell off has to be complete. In liquidation, we win!

Matthew 10:39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
