1 Loving the marginalized

2 The Parable of the rich fool
13 Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” 14 Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?”15 Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” 16 And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. 17 He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’

3 The Parable of the rich fool
18 “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. 19 And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’ 20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’ 21 “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”

4 Lessons we learned from the rich fool
What are the religious and moral truths that Jesus teaches us through the Parable of the Rich Fool? Do you think people in our society behave in the same way the rich fool did? How so?

5 Lessons we learned from the rich fool
The rich often put their possessions before God and rely on their possessions before God We must not use God’s creation for our own selfish ends and keep other people from having the goods that God intended them to have We must become rich in faith Jesus tells us that in the kingdom of heaven, those who have had less than their fair share will be given more than those who have already taken more than they should have

6 The preferential option for the poor
Jesus tells us that solidarity with the poor is solidarity with God “As you did it to the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me” – Jesus, Matthew 25: 40 God’s special closeness with the poor is known as the preferential option for the poor The rich do not share in God’s closeness with the poor

7 The preferential option for the poor
The preferential option for the poor is a call to share AND a call to follow God’s example and give preferential love to the poor when making community decisions
