1. Role of the Roman Catholic Church Roman Catholic Church had little competition for many centuries. People began to criticize the Church for some of its practices. – Pope owned luxury goods – Priests were immoral (gambling, drinking, sex) The church’s influence over the lives of people began to weaken.

2. Role of the Printing Press Gutenberg’s printing press stimulated the growth of literacy. The Bible was now printed in common languages (not just Latin). – English – German – French

3. Martin Luther Challenges the Church In 1517, a German monk named Martin Luther protested the actions of a Church official. Luther’s main complaint was that Church officials were selling indulgences.

Luther posted his 95 Theses protesting the sale of indulgences and other actions. Luther Starts the Reformation

Indulgences = Paying the Catholic church to forgive sin so that a person or his/her family member would go to heaven. Vocabulary

Reformation = Religious movement to reform the Catholic church that led to new Protestant churches being formed. Vocabulary

Effects of Luther’s Protest The Lutheran Church started around – Luther’s ideas were rejected by the Pope and Holy Roman Emperor. – But his ideas were accepted by many others German princes who remained loyal to the Pope agreed to join forces against Luther’s ideas. Other princes who supported Luther’s ideas protested against this agreement.

Protestant = Christian that belongs to a non- Catholic church
