VAYESHEV (AND HE DWELT) Genesis/B’reisheet 37:1 – 40:23 “Joseph and His Brothers”

Rachel’s First Son It was Yosef or in English we say Joseph. Rachel died while giving birth to Benjamin. The Torah tells us how Jacob felt about Joseph

Genesis 37:3 “Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his sons, because he was the son of his old age; and he made him a varicolored tunic.”

Joseph’s Special Coat Jacob showed that he liked Joseph the best. He gave him a very colorful coat to wear.

Joseph’s Dreams One night, Joseph had a dream. He dreamed that his brothers’ bundles of grain bowed down to his bundle of grain! Then Joseph had another dream. He told his father and brothers about the dream. In it, the sun, moon, and 11 stars bowed down to him.

Joseph and his Brothers Jacob asked Joseph to go check up on his brothers and tell him what they were doing. When Joseph reached his brothers, they decided they wanted to hurt him! Joseph’s brothers stripped off his colorful coat and threw him in a pit.

Joseph Sold As A Slave They sold him to some slave traders who were going to Egypt! The brothers came up with a plan. They killed a goat and dipped Joseph’s coat into the goat’s blood. Then they took the bloody coat back to their father, Jacob.

This Sad Story Think of how everyone must feel. There are a lot of feelings in this story. We all have feelings, the important thing is what we do with them.

How Things Could Have Been Done Differently Think how it could have gone differently for Joseph and his brothers. The ancient rabbis taught that we have a choice between two paths.

The Two Paths “Yetzer HaTov” The Good Inclination Takes us on the good path “Yetzer HaRa” The Evil inclination That takes us on the bad path.

The Wolf Story One wolf is bad, full of anger fear and jealousy. The other wolf is good, full of kindness and love. Which wolf will win? The one that I feed.

Mattityahu 7:16-20 You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they? So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. So then, you will know them by their fruits.”

Yeshua’s Teaching Yeshua taught us that we can know if a person is good or bad by the way they act. A person who feeds the Yetzer HaRa will not act in a good way. Neither will a person who feeds the Yetzer HaTov have bad feelings towards others.

Let's Learn Hebrew! “Yetzer HaTov” The Good Inclination “Yetzer HaRa” The Evil inclination

Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.”

What Did We Learn Today? Learned that Jacob had twelve sons, but his favorite was Joseph. The brothers did not like Joseph and wanted to hurt or kill him. The choices that we make will result in good or bad things in our lives.
