COMSTAC Launch Operations Support Working Group May 17, 2007 Jim Ball Spaceport Development Manager NASA Kennedy Space Center Kennedy Space Center Spaceport Development Update

KSC Spaceport Development Update Summary Continuing Shuttle Landing Facility (SLF) Expanded Access Demonstration Program Completing Environmental Assessment for SLF Expanded Uses Supporting Commercial Orbital Transportation Services Implementing cooperative agreement with Space Florida to help facilitate improved spaceport infrastructure and access

SLF Expanded Access Demonstration Program Initiated in July 2005 To date, hosted seven diverse pathfinder projects Proven compatibility of uses with NASA’s mission and requirements Demonstrating operating concepts and parameters applicable to future uses, e.g. suborbital spaceflight

Starfighters F-104 Suborbital Pathfinder Project Simulating suborbital flight trajectories and operating concepts Initial test flights provided sonic boom data for EA Testing of Autonomous Flight Safety System & other instruments planned Other proof-of-concept tests are in planning stage with NASA and FAA

SLF Expanded Use Environmental Assessment Initiated in October 2006 Draft is in final preparation Addresses expanded uses envisioned from Spaceflight Development/Ops - Spaceflight Program & Mission Support Aviation - Aviation Test Operations - Airborne R&D - Other test applications Anticipate final draft by end of July

Potential infrastructure enhancements at SLF south field area to support expanded uses

Interagency Agreement Between NASA and Space Florida Agreement recently signed to facilitate cooperative planning for improved spaceport infrastructure and access Facilitates joint planning and pre-development activities to: - Renew and upgrade existing infrastructure and technologies at NASA-KSC - Improve access to and utility of spaceport infrastructure and capabilities by commercial space services providers - Foster a robust spaceport hosting diverse but compatible uses supporting civil space
