My Tentative Major MICHAEL CAMMACK

Introduction  Accounting has been my declared major since I enter Old Dominion University. I choose accounting as my major because it’s a field I enjoy studying and it seems to come natural due to the fact that I’m good with numbers.

Employment possibilities  Some of the employment opportunities for accountants are public accountants, management accountants, government accountants, internal auditors, and information technology auditors. I’ve actually spoken with a few people in the accounting field such as an management accountant, public accountant, and an internal auditor. All of them informed me I would have to take a certified public accountant exam even after I receive my degree to technically be an accountant.

Current Semester  As of right now I'm still pursing my degree in the accounting field. I honestly don’t plan on changing my major unless I have to, but I’m currently thinking about minoring in psychology. The only class I’ve taken this semester that relates to my career field is introduction to business. Introduction to business basically relates to all business fields, but it hasn’t presented any other challenges I would have to face on my journey to become an accountant. One class that I did take this semester that has kind of made me want to choose a different career field was ethics/philosophy. This class interest me a lot, but I'm still gone continue on the career path I've taken.

Advice for Classmates  The only advice I would give to my peers are to do something that makes you happy, its not a good idea to choose a career just because of how much money that field makes. You can have all the money in the world but if your not happy your not going to want to work that job.

Conclusion  When choosing my major it honestly took me a while to find a career field I would like to work in. I always found myself picking career fields only because they made at least six digits, but then I would sadly find out some of the harder obstacles I would have to face just to work in that field. Now I'm glad that I waited and found a career I like. My parents don’t put much pressure on me about my choice, because its what makes me happy. Lastly when it came to researching my career I obtained all my knowledge from bls.gov
