Definition “A short-term career exploration and experiential learning opportunity designed to connect students with current professionals in their career field of study.”
Purpose: For a student to gather first-hand information about a career field to help determine if it’s the right career for them. Goals: Increased Knowledge, Professional Growth, Academic and Career Confirmation Purpose and Goals
Designed to be flexible and short-term –Examples: Two mornings throughout one week; One full day; Three afternoons over two weeks, etc. –Scheduled directly between student and Host Externship Windows: –Autumn (September-December) –Spring (January-May) Time Commitment
Benefits of Participation Student ExternExternship Host Gather information related to a career to eliminate or confirm an academic major. Opportunity to share your experiences, insights, and advice to a motivated student. Get a realistic view of a career and its daily tasks, rewards, and challenges. Demonstrate how your profession and organization aligns with various majors. Receive practical ideas and insider advice about how to enter your field of interest. Gain exposure for your organization by introducing students to your company. Opportunity to practice your networking skills. Exposure to diverse thoughts, styles, personalities, and cultures. Chance to make professional contacts.Enhancement of coaching and leadership skills. Chance to "test" a career without a long- term commitment. Satisfaction from helping others and seeing them grow and make progress.
Expectations Student ExternExternship Host Preparation: company research, interview questions, location and directions, availability Host one student per Semester: Autumn (September-December) and Spring (January-May). Understanding that participation is non- paid, not for credit, and does not guarantee future employment. Be open to talking about your professional experiences and what you have learned throughout your career. Display appropriate level of etiquette and professionalism. Present a realistic outline of day-to-day work activities, tasks, joys, and challenges. Completion of program evaluation at the conclusion of the experience. Compile sample projects, presentations, equipment, and documents used in your position that you would be willing to review with the Student Extern. Completion of program evaluation at the conclusion of the experience.
Recruitment –Externship Hosts: local employers and professionals –Students: current CSCC students Registration –Hosts: Sign up as Contact in Career Quest and complete “Externship Host” survey –Students: Complete registration form with Career Services Process
Matching –Completed by Career Services staff based on responses of Hosts and students and determined by alignment of career field and academic program; a match is not guaranteed Orientation for students that are matched with a host –Review of requirements and expectations, completion of required forms Process cont’d.

Definition of a Mentorship “A mentor is a brain-to-pick, an ear to listen, and a push in the right direction.” (John Crosby)
Purpose To provide students with a link to a competent professional in a field they are interested in pursuing as a career. Goals Build Knowledge Foster Learning Connect Students Integrate Academic and Career Pathway Mentorship Program: Purpose & Goals
Communicate regularly during the length of the program (Autumn- Spring Semester). Face-to-Face meeting at least 1 time a month. Mentor/Mentee Time Commitment
The opportunity to give valuable feedback to students about the field that you work in. The ability to help students reach their full professional potential. The chance to show students the relevance of education as it pertains to the “real world” of work. Increased pride in your chosen career. Familiarize yourself with typical day-to-day activities and operations of a specific job. Get a realistic view of a profession. Gain an understanding of the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to be successful in your chosen career. Gather information related to a career to confirm your choice of academic major. Facilitate communication between yourself and the student matched to you. Be a role model. Host job shadowing and informational interviews with your mentee. Do not expect to employ student. Expectations Mentor
Expectations Mentee Attend Mentorship Program orientation. Take initiative in skills and career development. Take advantage of the training and assistance offered. Develop and utilize the skills of professionalism. Participate in job shadowing and informational interviews with your mentor. Do not expect employment from mentorship.
