Quiz on Chapter 15.4 on Monday Please get out your Japan Builds an Empire DBQ We will finish this today. I will grade it as a Critical Thinking Question. When you get to your Japan Deep Thinking Question, please write it on a separate piece of paper. I want you to keep your questions to study from for the quiz Friday.

Deep Thinking Question Considering all these documents together, Why does Japan decide to build an empire in Asia? Brainstorm some idea with your partner…

Answer Scoring: C level- – 1 reason given – evidence is general – includes an explanation of how evidence shows Japan’s reason for empire building For a higher grade – 2 reasons given – evidence is specific and detailed – includes an explanation of how evidence shows all of Japan’s reasons for empire building – Includes at least one quote from a primary source – Includes academic language and transitions to indicate examples, explanations etc.

Please do not talk at this timeSept 10 HW: Finish your Japan builds an empire rewrite! Please get out your Japan Builds an Empire DBQ and trade papers with your partner. If you do not have your Japan DBQ, please move to the back of the room and finish it now. We are going to do a Peer Review of this answer. Peer Reviews are helpful when you are learning how to express critical thinking because they make your brain look at the language and the reasoning in a new way. You will need a pen or pencil of a different color than the one the paper in front of you is written in. Please write your name at the bottom of the page after Peer Reviewer:

Please do the following: Locate the Thesis statement in the student’s answer. It should be one sentence that answers the question, Why does Japan decide to build an empire in Asia? Underline the Thesis. If there is no Thesis, write Thesis? In the margin. It should contain the word “because”. Circle the word because. If there is no because write Why next to the sentence.

Locate the reasons given. For each reason, write a number. If only 1 reason is given, you will only have a 1 written at the start of it. If 2 reasons are given, write a 2 next to the second one and so on. Locate the specific details in each reason. Write letters after each one. If there is only 1 specific detail in the first reason write 1A next to that detail. If there are 2 write 1B next to the second one, and so on. If you can’t find any details, write This Needs Details in the margin.

Locate the explanation for each reason. This will say how the reason given is a cause of Japanese empire building. Put a squiggle line under the explanation. If you can’t find the explanation, write How is this a cause of Japanese empire building? At the end of the answer.

Now, look for a quote or a reference to a specific document. Put a heart next to each quote or document reference. If you can’t find one, write This Needs A Quote in the margin.

Please locate any academic transition and cue words and put a * next to them. Transitions- also, again, as well as, besides, coupled with, furthermore, in addition, likewise, moreover, similarly, To indicate evidence: chiefly, especially, for instance, in particular, markedly, namely, particularly, including, specifically, such as, for example, for instance, for one thing, as an illustration, illustrated with, as an example, in this case Sequence- at first, first of all, to begin with, in the first place, at the same time, for now, for the time being, the next step, in time, in turn, later on, meanwhile, next, then, soon, the meantime, later, while, earlier, simultaneously, afterward, in conclusion, with this in mind Explanation- because, on account of If you can’t find any, write Cue Words! In the margin or suggest some.

Please return these papers…. How did you do? Are you missing any of these things? Rewrite your answer and make any necessary changes. Turn your new, better answer in on the block day! Must now be typed or printed neatly, double spaced and 1 page or less.

Please get out a piece of paper and label it Pg. 18A/B Start of WWII DBQ. We will look at some Primary Source Documents on Why WWII Started today. As we read through these documents, answer the questions on the handout on a piece of paper. The next slide will show the group that you are in. You also have the option of simply highlighting or writing on the notes you have already taken. I am going to hit the most important points from this period in history.

Axis Aggression Take Aways Before Starting WWII, Japan, Italy and Germany all test the surrounding countries to see what they will do. Japan invades Korea, Manchuria and China for resources and power – The USA does nothing in exchange for control of the Philippines. – Europe remains uninterested. Italy invades Ethiopia – Ethiopia asks the League of Nations for help, but the countries of the League can’t agree on what to do and do nothing. Germany invades the Rhineland, Austria, and the Sudetenland. – The countries of Europe do nothing, afraid that Germany will start a war they aren’t ready to fight. – The countries of Europe eventually call the Munich Conference and decide to sacrifice Czechoslovakia to Germany in exchange for peace.

Pg. 19A The Failure of the League of Nations Please set up a piece of paper with the above title Then get a League Of Nations Political Cartoon and glue it to the bottom left of your Handout. You will take some notes on this page and answer the questions.

The Ineffectiveness of the League of Nations  No Authority.  No Military.  Members Make and Break Promises. How are these things preventing the League from being effective?

Above: What does a Rabbit symbolize? What does a Snake symbolize? What does a Bow mean? Below: What is this Cartoon saying about the League of Nations? Tell your partner what you see in this picture.

Telling the story…. Find a new partner…. Tell the story of the time leading up to WWII. Start with “Once upon a time, at the end of WWI, the Treaty of Versailles was signed….” Person 1 starts talking and keeps going until they can’t think of anything else to say… when that happens they say “and Then….” and Person B takes over. On the next slide you will see a few topics you should know about. Work these topics into your story. You can look them over in your notes now….

Deep Thinking Activity Summarize the Nazi-Soviet Non Aggression Pact using the political cartoon.

Nazi Soviet Non Aggression Take Aways Add these to the back of pg. 20C Historically Fascists and Communists HATE each other. Stalin feared Hitler would start a war before Russia was ready to fight. He also felt the other countries of Europe would be useless in a war with Germany. He agrees to the Non Aggression pact to get some of Poland and buy some time for the USSR to build their army. Hitler doesn’t want to fight on two sides (West and East) He agrees to the Pact to ensure that he only has to fight one side of Europe at a time.
