The Learning Target for Today I can explain how sectionalism made life different in the North and South

Sectionalism: Loyalty to your Region or State over the Nation In the early 1800’s the North, South and West Sections of the country are arguing over three major issues. Tariffs, Internal Improvements (roads, bridges and canals) The sale of Public Lands

The North 1) Industry and Manufacturing 2) Immigrant labor 3) High Tariffs (taxes on foreign goods) 4) Government spending on Internal improvements on transportation 5) Against selling Western Lands at low prices 6) Anti Slavery

The South 1) Plantations growing cash crops like Cotton and Tabaco 2) Slave labor 3) Low or no Tariffs on imported goods 4) Against Government spending on improvements if it raised Tariffs 5) Ok with selling Western lands cheaply 6) Pro Slavery

The West 1) Farming and Ranching 2) Pioneers (mainly from the North) and Immigrants from Europe 3) Ok with Tariffs if money goes to improvements 4) Wants Government spending on roads, canals and bridges 5) Want public lands sold cheaply to bring settles to Western lands 6) Anti and Pro Slavery depending on which region (North or South) they came from

Discussion Questions What differences in economic goals divided North, South and West? Why was the Tariff a matter of sectional conflict? Why would President Jackson ( First president born in the West) have issues with the North and the South on land sales and tariffs?
