Eastgate Elementary School Bellevue, Washington Elementary School Design Concept Awards – Projects in the Design Phase NAC|Architecture 2008 Exhibition of School Planning and Architecture

Eastgate Elementary School

Community Environment Eastgate Elementary is surrounded by an established residential neighborhood and shares the site with an early childhood education center. The site has long been shared by the neighborhood, whether for youth sports, or as a place for neighbors to walk up the trail through the wooded ravine. The new design provides for use of the school by two different community groups simultaneously, with the ability to close off the rest of the building. An exceptional connection between the PTA and teachers resulted in a number of art projects throughout the site, executed by artists, PTA, teachers and students. Learning Environment The school is designed as a series of “learning neighborhoods” at each grade level, creating the opportunity for teachers to know all the students in their learning group well, enabling them to provide a more effectively stimulating learning atmosphere for all types of learners. The whole site is treated as a holistic environment, where “neighborhoods” are open to and share outdoor courtyards and gardens providing numerous opportunities for students’ indoor and outdoor learning. The school and site design together enable a variety of learning modes, from the entire class to small groups, for project-based activities or mentor/peer one-on-one support.

Physical Environment Many spaces are designed for enhanced social and educational interaction between students, teachers and community members.

Physical Environment A series of courtyards and exterior play areas provide a continuous indoor/outdoor connection which provides conditions to support many different learning modalities, and develop students’ multiple intelligences.

Planning Process The site is bowl shaped, tipped towards the street and surrounded by tall evergreen trees. There is a tangible sense of nature in the heart of the city. The planning was focused on taking advantage of such qualities for the betterment of the learning environment, so that the school becomes a place to grow and learn—to connect with self and nature. Eastgate Elementary has long embraced a collaborative teaching culture. In order to best accommodate the preferred modes of collaboration for the teachers, the design team and the users explored a large number of different “neighborhood designs.”

Energy conscious sustainable design The project is designed to achieve an Energy Star rating. A ground source heat pump system was used to eliminate the need for natural gas, reducing the building’s carbon footprint. The building was carefully planned to optimize daylighting, preserve the natural setting, and minimize excavation and earth moving. Digital daylighting analysis

Optimizing daylighting: sunscreens and light shelves in typical classroom. Ground source heat pump loop system
