A Place to Gather Community Environment: Located on the Northeast Lakeview College campus, an Alamo College, the school houses separate functions within two buildings: administration and academic. Both buildings were placed on the site to relate to each other and the adjoining college campus. The administration building includes a large, commons area which is used for dining and social functions, including community gatherings and educational events or large group instruction.

Student Plaza Community Environment: Created between the adjacent academic and administration buildings are multiple student gathering areas. These plazas consists of spaces for exterior dining, study or recreation. Durable exterior materials were used to enhance architectural details of the Judson Early College Academy (JECA) to compliment the existing Northeast Lakeview campus.

The Science & Technology of Learning Learning Environment: The classrooms have a primary and secondary teaching wall and include projectors and screens. Two science labs, fully equipped with storage, sinks, fume hoods and prep rooms have been provided. Both buildings contain data connections and are designed with adaptability for future technological expansion. Building functions are organized and work spaces easily detectable. All the academic facilities meet district and college standards.

Light for Learning Learning Environment: Every classroom is equipped to allow flexibility between subjects or grade levels. Learning spaces feature controlled task lighting and louvered windows to allow filtered natural light into the classroom. The campus’ unique design provides each classroom with views into the student plazas and the neighboring college campus

Materials to Last Physical Environment : Building materials were selected to provide a low maintenance, long lasting facility that could stand the test of time. Brick, glass and metal were used for the exterior. Indigenous landscaping was used to enhance the student plazas and reduce water used for landscape irrigation. To provide drainage in the parking areas, additional landscape was dispersed along with an underground system.

Sustainability Physical Environment : The school’s HVAC system is serviced from the college campus’ central plant with the air handler units controlled locally through each building’s automation system. High traffic and instructional areas consistently feature durable interior finishes that have recycled content, filtered natural light and optimal acoustics for teaching. To achieve water efficiency low flow plumbing fixtures were installed throughout the campus.

Collaboration & Planning Planning Process: The planning process included a collaboration of Judson ISD administrators, educators, facility planners and Alamo College staff from conception of the program requirements and design development to the review of pricing exercises of the construction documents. The education program was conceived and executed in the development of the design program for an estimated student body of 500 and modified accordingly to suit user needs.
