Our new certificate program explores language and culture at a higher, more rigorous level than found in traditional second language acquisition courses. It focuses on international awareness, the appreciation of cultural diversity and proficiency in French all within the framework of the International Baccalaureate program. Certificate Requirements for the French Immersion Certificate of Accomplishment Students must take a minimum of 24 credits of French. French Immersion 9 (2 semesters) taken during the student’s freshmen year French Immersion 10 (2 semesters) taken during the student’s sophomore year French Immersion 11 (2 semesters) taken during the student’s junior year French Immersion 12 (2 semesters) taken during the student’s senior year Writing for content (1 semester) to be completed by January of the student’s junior year Your voice in French (1 semester) to be completed by January of the student’s junior year Two Topic Courses (2 semesters) chosen by the student and completed at any time Coursework

Certificate Requirements for the French Immersion Certificate of Accomplishment Fall, 2015 IB French Topics: Your voice in French (Fall Semester) – This course provides practice of French conversational skills required for advanced work in the French International Baccalaureate program. Students build confidence through task oriented communication activities. Comprehension, pronunciation and fluency skills are addressed. This course is required for all immersion students who are working towards the immersion certificate. It must be completed by the end of one’s junior year. Prerequisite: current immersion student, completion of French 4 or above or teacher’s approval IB French Topics: La Belle Époque (Fall Semester) – This course focuses on the dazzling cultural life of turn-of-the-century France (1871 – 1914), a period characterized by optimism, peace at home and in Europe, new technology and scientific discoveries. Students explore the political, social, intellectual, and artistic aspects of the period through its masterpieces of literature, music, theater and the visual arts. Prerequisite: current immersion student, completion of French 4 or above or teacher’s approval Examples of Courses

Certificate Requirements for the French Immersion Certificate of Accomplishment Spring, 2016 IB French Topics: Writing for Content (Spring Semester) – This course provides the student with a solid understanding and practice of the various writing styles required for advanced work in the French International Baccalaureate program. Reading skills will be addressed through a novel study that acts as the foundation of the writing themes. This course is required for all immersion students who are working towards the immersion graduation certificate. It must be completed by the end of one’s junior year. Prerequisite: current immersion student, completion of French 4 or above or teacher’s approval IB French Topics: France today: Who are the French? (Spring Semester) - In this course, students will be introduced to contemporary French society in order to understand the forces that have shaped and continue to shape French culture and France's position globally. Major issues facing France today will be analyzed and discussed through the use of authentic print and online media. Students will learn the important social and political structures that make France what it is today. Prerequisite: current immersion student, completion of French 4 or above or teacher’s approval Examples of Courses
