3 STANDARD COURSE OF STUDY 1 course credit in: Freshman Seminar (BRASS) (required freshman course) 4 course credits in English: English I, II, III, IV 4 course credits in Math: Math I, II, III and either Math IV or another advanced math course requiring Math III (or Algebra II) as prerequisite 4 course credits in Science: Earth/Environmental Science, Biology, one physical science, and one additional science elective 4 course credits in Social Studies: World History, Civics/Economics, American History I and II 2 course credits in the same Foreign Language, such as Spanish I and II 1 course credit in Health and Physical Education 4 course credits in: Electives 24 Total Course Credits

4 GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS ACADEMIC AREAS 24 or more credits 3 or higher on EOC’s 2 PBL’s Graduation Project OTHER AREAS Not more than 15 unexcused absences in Senior Year 10+ hours of approved school/community service in Senior Year

5 Freshman : all students are classified Freshmen in first year of high school. Sophomore : 5 credits Junior : 11 credits Senior : earned enough credits to be within graduation by end of school year PROMOTION REQUIREMENTS

8 2016-2017 COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

9 SCIENCE COURSE DESCRIPTIONS Earth Science Covers the following topics: Earth’s role in space, how processes and forces affect the lithosphere, the structure and processes within the hydroshere, patterns of global change etc. Biology Investigates cells and organelles both in structure and functions. Living organisms and their environments are studied and evaluated. Covers evolution through natural selection and how DNA affects the alleles and genetic traits.

10 ELECTIVES (EXAMPLES) Team Sports I Sports taught will include floor hockey, basketball, volleyball, flag football, and various team sports. You will learn basic offensive and defensive strategies, play making, rules, and team work. Spanish I This course will offer an introduction to the Spanish language: including sound system, pronunciation, functional vocabulary, cultural information and basic grammatical structures.

11 REGISTRATION PLAN 8 th grade Meet with all current 8 th grade students through PE Beginning-April 25 th Review registration form, options, and course selection guide 9 th grade Meet with all current 9 th graders through their third period class Review learning styles, registration form, options, CFNC, high school planning, and course section guide Return to third period classes to review course form in small groups
