What elements and compounds are in the ocean besides water (H 2 O)?

Properties of the Ocean  Ocean water is about 96% pure water or H ₂O. The most abundant elements in ocean water are hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O). The other 2 most abundant elements are chlorine and sodium.  Oceanographers are scientists who study the ocean.

Ocean Chemistry Solids in Ocean Water  Sodium Chloride (NaCl) is the most abundant salt.  Salinity is the amount of dissolved salts in ocean water  Three sources of salt are – Volcanic activity, waves, and erosion

Salinity  For every 1000 grams of ocean water, 35 of those grams are salt (3.4% of mass). This means that 100 pounds of ocean water would contain 3.5 pounds of salt.  Why is the ocean salty? Water that moves across the earth dissolves the salt and carries it to the ocean. When water evaporates from the ocean, it leaves the salt behind.

Salinity varies based on 1.Temperature and evaporation of water. When water evaporates, it leaves the salt behind making the water saltier (orange). 2. Closeness to a “fresh” water source like a river or icebergs causes low salinity (blue). Continents in gray

Gases in Oceans  Most abundant gases in the ocean are nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and oxygen.  Gases vary with depth, more are at the surface.

Temperature & Pressure of the Ocean  Sun is the major source of heat for the ocean.  Warm water is less dense than cold water.  As you go deeper, the temperature drops.  Surface water is usually warmer than deep water  Pressure of the water increases with depth because more water is on top.  Salty water is more dense than fresh water. That means that salty water wants to sink below fresh water.  Cold water is more dense than warm water. That means that cold water wants to sink below warm water.  These properties cause water to want to move around. This affects currents.

Less light so the living things must be able to live without light. More pressure due to the weight of the water above. It usually gets colder the deeper you go.

Salty water is more dense than fresh water. That means that fresh water will “float” on top of salty water and not mix well. Cold water is more dense than warm water. That means that warm water will “float” on top of cold water. Both these facts make water want to move. If cold water moves on top of warm water, the difference in density will make them slowly switch places. This causes currents.
