Presentation transcript:

Robert Fox, Ben Kellogg, Kasey Kitto, Jack Palmer Senior Project 2015: Lorenz Water Wheel

Background Edward Lorenz, 1960 Chaos Theory: Wheel constructed with buckets that leak water, causes wheel to change direction randomly and unpredictably Motion achieved by altering inflow of water source and outflow of each bucket

Materials Bicycle wheel Tin funnels U-channel pole (similar to those that hold up road signs) Tub Water pump Hose Wooden blocks to fasten pole to tub Steel rods Vinyl hose to direct outflow of water from funnels Nuts, bolts, washers

Sample of Motion

Challenges Leveling tub and pole (mounting/anchoring pole) Regulating outflow of funnels (tiny rocks) Possible outcomes: Wheel continues to turn one direction Wheel stops moving when buckets don’t fall under the water source and each bucket empties Continuous chaotic motion (success) Number of buckets Only six funnels left a lot of open space in between each funnel, meaning when wheel slowed down it would tend to stop in between funnels
