Enlightenment Period Learning Target: Identify the changes in the culture of Europe during the Enlightenment

How Ideas Spread There were three major ways Enlightenment ideas were spread through Europe…… 1.Salons 2. Encyclopedie 3. Printing Press

Salon The idea originated in France as a place where people could meet and exchange ideas Individuals would attend these gatherings at the home of a wealthy citizen. Topics of conversation could involve politics, social philosophies, art, etc.

Encyclopedie -Edited by Denis Diderot, this was a collection of Enlightenment Thinker’s works -Books that included everything known to man about science, technology, history, and the ideas of the Enlightenment. -Criticized the Church and government, and praised religious tolerance -Catholic Church banned it

Printing Press -Invented by Johannes Gutenberg -Allowed for the mass spreading of ideas through pamphlets, newspapers, books -quicker, more affordable, more people were able to be exposed to the printed word

What did Salons, The Encyclopedie, and the Printing Press do for the Enlightenment Period? A.It helped create a sense of peace between the church and the Enlightenment Thinkers B.It gave the citizens less opportunity to learn about the new ideas C.It helped spread the news ideas at a much faster pace to citizens D.It gave the Catholic Church the information they needed to accept the scientific method as the correct way to answer questions

What was Voltaire’s beliefs regarding the right of speech? A.The government should not allow citizens freedom of speech B.All citizens should be allowed to have freedom of speech C.Depending on the topic, a person should have freedom of speech D.He did not say anything about the rights of speech

Enlightened Despots Rulers who sought to govern by Enlightenment principles, by maintaining their royal powers 1.Fredrick II of Prussia-abolished the use of torture except for treason and murder, established schools 2.Maria Theresa-Austria-schools, freed serfs on her estates 3.Joseph-Austria-abolished serfdom, freedom of press

Classical Movements Classicism-art movement inspired by enlightenment and centered on order and reason Architecture-uses symmetry and math to create simple, but dignified buildings (ex: Thomas Jefferson’s home in Monticello, White House in D.C.

Drama/Writing Looked back to the classical Greek and Roman authors but maintained their devotion to reason Art-classicism of art focused on realistic and simplistic styles and colors of blues, yellows, and reds

Classicism during the Enlightenment Period was a movement that A.Inspired artists, musicians, and architects to capture the spirit of the ancients while centering their works on order and reason B.Inspired artists, musicians, and architects transitioned to traditional forms of art and relied on magic to explain things C.Used the past to explain the future D.Used futuristic ideas to build and design
