European Venture Philanthropy and Social Investment December 10, 2014 Ewa Konczal, CEE Manager, EVPA

What is Venture Philanthropy/Social Investment? It is about matching the soul of philanthropy with the spirit of investing Venture Philanthropy/Social Investment is about societal impact. about building strong impact-centric organizations; it is high- engagement, and long-term. About providing multi-year tailored financial support, spanning from grant-giving to investing…. ….and non-financial support (management competences, legal advice, etc.) includes social impact and performance measurement tools

VP/SI Spectrum: Definitions Spectrum from the very right with traditional business where the primariy diver is to create financial value to the very left side (traditional charities, foundations) where the primary diver is to create social value: VP spreads from impact only to impact first – stops when financial returns are more imporant then social returns. +II SPO= primary purpose is to create social value SE= organisations focussing on achieving SI, applying market based solutions to solve public/market failure in innovative way Socially driven business = profit distributing businesses but with clear and stated social objectives • Charity, non-profit, not for profit, foundation, association, company limited by guarantee, (having no trading activities, or where trading is of marginal importance) • Social enterprise, Community Interest Company, (having trading as a significant or exclusive part of their operations). Some do not make any financial returns to investors (or cap returns) but reinvest surpluses into the organisation.  Even within social enterprise there are several different models. Venture Philanthropy Organisation (VPO) A venture philanthropy organisation provides long-term financing to social purpose organisations (SPOs) operating with the principles of venture philanthropy. Social enterprise can take on a variety of legal forms. Impact investing Impact investing is a form of investment that aims at generating social impact as well as financial return. The relatively newer term “Impact Investment” includes both impact first and finance first strategies.

What is EVPA? Increase number of practitioners in VP/SI. Mission EVPA’s mission is to be the natural home as well as the highest-value catalytic network of European social investors, venture philanthropists and foundations. EVPA is a membership association made up of organisations interested in or practicing venture philanthropy and social investment across Europe. EVPA's objectives: Increase number of practitioners in VP/SI. increase amount of resources dedicated to VP/SI. Currently the association has nearly 200 members from 25 countries. Many funders find this more engaged form of philanthropy (“venture philanthropy”) and social investment complex , difficult to implement, and looking for ways how to ‘become better’ hence are looking for an organisation to take the lead on describing best practice and helping VPOs increase their effectiveness 2 objectives Increase the effectiveness of VP/SI Practitioners in Europe Increase resources dedicated to VP/SI in Europe
