Unit 3 – Area of Study 1  Outcome 1: Compare the health status of Australia’s population with other developed countries, compare and explain the variations in health status of population groups in Australia and discuss the role of the National Health Priority Areas in improving Australia’s health.

Health?  What is Health: A state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.  Definition coined by the World Health Organisation  The WHO was created in 1948 after the United Nations met in 1945 and decided that a branch for global health needed to be established.  WHO is the global force providing leadership on global health matters, providing research and technical support to countries on assessing health trends.

Defining Health  This definition is significant because it was the first definition recognising health is more that physical. But it is limiting because it doesn’t give everyone the ability to be considered healthy.  Health Status is a continuum. Factors such as illness, relationship breakdowns, and stress can alter where you are on the continuum.  Draw a heath continuum (See page 5) and place yourself on it. Justify your position.

Dimensions of Health  Physical, Social and Mental health are the 3 dimensions of health  What are examples of each of these dimensions?  Copy figures 1.6, 1.8 and 1.9 into your Health books  Complete page 1 of your workbook.
