Local Government Academy Nonpartisan, nonprofit promoting excellence in local government – Strong and Responsive Local Government System – Develop local leaders – Educate public officials, employees, citizens – Promote Collaboration and Partnerships Founded in 1983

Local Government Academy 3 Primary Functions – Training – Technical Assistance – Municipal Internship Program Values: – No lobbying – Multi-sector: business, government, civic, academic – Accessible

Programming – Officials and Employees Newly Elected Officials Course (for elected officials only) Stand-alone programs and program series throughout year (open to public) – “Contemplating Governing” for candidates Pledge to Excellence – Citizen Education campaign, 2013 Local Government Academy

Results 2012: 6 year average: participants- 118 hours of training - 37 sessions- Average class size: organizations- Average length of class 3 hours Participants- 967 organizations - 54 sessions- 30 counties hours of training

Local Government Academy Mutual Benefits of a Partnership – Organize a stakeholder group with same stakeholders: business, gov’t, academic, civic – More local programs for NWPA developed with LGA support and supervision – LGA is 501(c)3- for donations tax deductible – LGA establishes contractual relationships program coordinator to do program development and deployment, promotion in the northwestern PA region – Expected 80% of all revenue remains in region for programs; participants from all western PA served by programs generated locally but promoted regionally
