Monday, September 21 Words of the Week  Theme-Message or insight about life presented in a work of literature  Setting-Where a story takes place  Infer-To make a guess about what is going on or what will happen based on textual evidence  Mood-feeling the audiences experiences from a work of art, literature, film, etc.  Foreshadowing-Hints about the future  Symbolism-When something stands for something else in a work of literature

Mood in Mary Poppins What effects do the filmmakers use to create mood? How might these effects translate to written work?  

“The Lottery”  As we read  Annotate Write your questions, inner thoughts, etc. out to the side of the text  Highlight/underline text that shows examples of how the imagery contributes to mood and foreshadowing  Think about what the theme of this piece might be

Personal Narrative Essay  What is it?  A story about one scene, one incident that happened to you  It may be a happy moment, sad, moment of pride, anything of significance to you  4-5 pages, double spaced  May include dialogue, imagery, etc. like the short stories we have been reading  When is it due?  Plans/outline due Wednesday, September 23  1 page typed/shared on Google Docs by end of hour on Thursday (we will be in the writing lab)  At least 10 comments posted to drafts of other writers-September 29  Second draft posted to Google Docs—October1 (at least 3 pages)  At least 6 new comments posted to drafts of other writers—October 6  Final Copy—October 13  Are we working on it in class?  Yes, we will have some computer lab time but you are also expected to work on this essay as homework. Few people would be able to finish this with only class time

Top 5 Moments that Mattered  Quitting McDonalds in Ann Arbor  Going to the Carman Ainsworth table at the job fair  My first date with my (would-be) husband  The day we brought Salim home from the hospital  My last day with Navid

Top 5 Times the Weather Mattered  When we had a freakish rain storm that flooded our basement and I lost a lot of memories  When there was a tornado watch and I had to walk home from school for the first time (kindergarten)  When it snowed IN APRIL!! and I got in an accident and flipped the car  When the sun was so hot in Mexico that I burned the tops of my ears (the only place I didn’t use sunscreen)  When Navid’s birthday was snowed out (again) and so many people couldn’t come to his birthday

Top 5 Times You Were a Teacher  The first day of teaching high school  The experience of having a student teacher  Teaching the boys about different songs while driving (“The Joker,” “Boom, Clap”)  “Teaching” to be mean in Mrs. Shaw’s class  English words with relatives

Planning!  Use your blank sheet to start planning your essay.  You may want to consider  A web  An outline  Notes/ideas  Drawing  Actually just writing  Whatever your pre-writing strategy is Bring your notes tomorrow and be prepared to share/get feedback and give feedback to other writers

“The Lottery” Discussion  Craft  Where did the writer use foreshadowing?  Where is the imagery very powerful? What makes it powerful imagery?  What techniques did this author use that I might want to use in my personal narrative essay?  Synthesis  What quotes were interesting? Why?  Do people today question tradition? Why or why not?  What strange, violent, or inappropriate things do people do today that nobody questions, simply out of tradition?  Evaluation  Is it ever okay to murder? Why or why not?  If something is bad, but it helps society, should we still do it? Examples?
