Monday

Read p171 and respond to the following prompts silently on your bell-ringer/exit ticket handout: 1.Why is communication between the external and internal environment more complicated in complex organisms? 2.Do humans and other organisms have to consciously plan and carry out a response to every change in the external environment? Explain.

How do our organ systems work together to help maintain our body’s internal balance (homeostasis)?

Students will be able to……. Pull out the Very Important Points (VIP’s) from a reading by completing a Metacognitive Reading Log

1.Discuss BR & Chap 5 2.Review changes to assignment collection & BR/Summary policy 3.Review changes to biology binder & notebook 4.Complete VIP reading Log

How will in class and homework assignments be collected & graded? All assignments for the week will be collected in a packet on Friday. All assignments must be complete and have a stamp to earn full credit. Graded assignment packets will be passed back the following week. It is your job to return these assignments to the appropriate section of your binder.

How will bell-ringers & exit tickets be collected & graded? All students will receive a new bell-ringer/exit ticket sheet on Monday. All bell-ringers & exit tickets must be completed and stamped on this sheet to receive full credit. This bell-ringer/exit ticket sheet will be collected on Friday as part of your weekly assignment packet.

How will the new biology binder be set up? Everyone will be required to have a 2” biology binder by Friday with the following dividers set up and work organized: Section 1: Reference For handouts such as lab report rubrics, think out loud bookmarks, reading log templates, etc. Section 2: Bell-ringers & Exit Tickets Section 3: Reading Logs Section 4: Assignments (in & out of class) Section 5: Assessments (Tests/Quizzes/Exams)

Do I need a composition book anymore? Yes! You still need your composition book. Your composition book will be used now as a lab notebook. All work for all labs will be done in your composition book. You will then take what you wrote in your lab notebook and type up your lab report. Remove all bell-ringers & reading logs from your notebook and place them in your binder by Friday.

CONVERSATION Level 0 = silence HELP Raise hand Wait patiently for teacher MOVEMENT None PARTICIPATION Complete VIP reading log by end of class

Finish VIP Reading Log if not finished in class Organize biology binder by Friday. There will be a binder check & lab notebook check.

Looking at the thoughts you wrote in your reading log, what level would you place yourself in the metacognitive funnel? What could you do to get to the next higher level?

Tuesday

Read the paragraph under “What’s Your Temperature Now?” on p173 and respond to the following prompt on your bell-ringer handout. What were the external stress factors discussed? What was the body’s automatic physiological response to those factors? Homework Bin: VIP reading log p

How do our organ systems work together to help maintain our body’s internal balance (homeostasis)?

Students will be able to……. Design an experiment to understand how the body automatically accomodates external temperature changes with specific internal temperature change.

1.Discuss BR 2.Introduce Temperature Lab & Materials 3.Write lab procedure 4.Review lab procedure 5.Exit Ticket

Reminders Make-up quiz after school today only at 3:15. Binder & Notebook check on Friday.

CONVERSATION  Up to level 2  Only about lab procedure  Only with your group members HELP  Red cup = emergency question  Yellow cup = can wait question  Blue cup = no question  Continue working while you wait  Ask 3 before me MOVEMENT Acceptable reasons:  Restroom (only with pass) PARTICIPATION Getting Lab Procedure approved Writing procedure in lab notebook

Examine your team’s lab procedure and answer the following questions: 1.What is the independent variable? 2.What is the dependent variable? 3.Write a prediction for how you think your test subject’s core temperature will respond to changes in the surface temperature.

Wednesday

Students will be able to……. Conduct an experiment to understand how the body automatically accomodates external temperature changes with specific internal temperature change.

How do our organ systems work together to help maintain our body’s internal balance (homeostasis)?

1.Review procedure 2.Conduct experiment/record data 3.Complete data summary 4.Set up graph 5.Exit Ticket

Examine your team’s data and answer the following question: 1. What changes did you observe in the test subject’s core & surface temperatures?

Thursday

Examine the data you collected in your data table yesterday and respond to the following prompts: 1.What do you notice about your data? 2.Are there any trends or patterns? Homework Bin: Line graph from yesterday’s lab.

How do our organ systems work together to help maintain our body’s internal balance (homeostasis)?

Students will be able to……. Analyze the data from “What’s Your Temperature Now” lab and write a MELCon lab conclusion.

1.Step 6 Data Summary questions 2.Finish line graph 3.Step 7—1a, 1b, 1c 4.Step 8 MELCon lab conclusion

Read “Stepping up the Pace” on p177 and respond to the following prompt: Maintaining an average core temperature of 37 C (98.6 F) involves only responses of the circulatory system. True or False. If False correct the statement to make it true.

How do our organ systems work together to help maintain our body’s internal balance (homeostasis)?

Students will be able to……. Pick out the most important points from a science essay to determine how the body coordinates to maintain homeostasis.

1.Read “Careful Coordination” p Share VIP’s with partner. 3.Share VIP’s with small group. 4.Share VIP’s with class. 5.Pick out the MVIP.
