Read through the science fair packet you picked up on the way in & answer the following questions: 1.What are the two required materials for science fair? 2.What does the title need to be like? 3.What is the purpose of the research section?

Basic Info 1.Syllabus 2.Procedures 3.Safety Rules 4.Class Map 5.Reading Strategies 6.Lab Template Example 7.Science Fair Info Packet

High School Science Fair Required (in biology & some other sciences)! Must be high school level Must have the following sections: Title Problem/Question Research Variables Hypothesis Materials Procedures Data Graph w/ analysis Conclusion Lab Journal/Notebook Which of these sections looks different from our normal lab template?

Topic Categories Animal Science Behavioral and Social Science Biochemistry/Chemistry Cellular & Molecular Biology Computer and Mathematical Science Earth Science Engineering Energy & Transportation Environmental Science Medicine and Health Microbiology Physics and Astronomy Plant Sciences Look over potential questions & star the topics that interest you the most

Timeline Topic Generation Due Friday 9-13! Research PlanDue Monday 9-23 Experimental DesignDue Wednesday 10-9 Approval formsDue N/A Begin ExperimentDue Fri. 10-11 Raw Data Due Tues. 11-26 Graphs & ConclusionDue Fri. 12-6 Poster ComponentsDue Fri. 12-6 Poster Board CompleteDue Mon. 12-16 Class Science Fair High School Fair

Partners? Bio 1-2 classes- individual or partner (partner must be from same class period) Pre-AP classes- individual only We will go to computer lab Friday to generate topics & fill out TERM sheet

Closure- next to due dates Write down THREE specific things you can do to stay on top of due dates for science fair

Sit with your lab group! 1.Read the Haters article (DO NOT WRITE- class copy) 2.What was the treatment in this experiment? 3.What did they measure? 4.What was their conclusion? 5.Bring up your BW & the article to stamp & turn in. 6.Begin googling possible questions from your favorite (starred) categories in the science fair packet  example “Chemistry high school science fair questions” or “Behavioral science high school science fair questions” etc. etc. etc.

Research PlanDue Monday 9-23 Experimental DesignDue Wednesday 10-2 Approval formsDue N/A Begin ExperimentDue Mon. 10-7 Raw Data Due Tues. 11-26 Graphs & ConclusionDue Fri. 12-6 Poster ComponentsDue Tues. 12-10 Poster Board CompleteDue Mon. 12-16 Class Science Fair High School Fair

Today Bring a list of 3-5 possible science fair questions to Ms. D Ms. D will star HS level Qs & give you a TERM sheet Fill out TERM sheet & turn in (due today) Start research plan if finished early

Sit with your lab group! 1.Do NOT log on to computer yet. 2.Which part of TERM is the independent variable? 3.Which part of TERM is the dependent variable? 4.What is a constant variable? 5.In what format do we write a hypothesis? 6.Bring BW (& jackrabbits lab if you took it home) & come get stamped 7.While waiting for others to finish BW- look over the critter assignment & pick the three sections you want to do. Start the outline for those three sections.

Critter Project (Bio 1-2) Pick THREE of the five requirements (mixture of drawings & writing) If you pick #4, you also MUST do #2 because they are related Complete outline for the 3 you picked (HW this weekend unless you finish in class today!) Mon- write rough draft after science cafe Tues- type final draft in computer lab & continue science fair Thurs- critter DUE!

Today 1. Finish the (yellow) research proposal- due today @ 9:15 More detail = more likely to be approved by the HS science review committee! 2. Finish the front page of your science fair rough draft packet (finish today & come get stamped) 3. Work on the outline for your next critter assignment (going to computer lab Tuesday to type up final draft, due next Thursday)

Closure What do you still need to finish & when is each thing due? Jackrabbits & Coyotes Graph Yellow research proposal Front page of science fair rough draft packet Critter Outline

Closure What do you still need to finish & when is each thing due? Jackrabbits & Coyotes Graph TODAY 2:30PM Yellow research proposal TODAY 2:30PM Front page of science fair rough draft packet MONDAY Critter Outline MONDAY

Sit with your lab group! 1.Which part of TERM is the independent variable? 2.Which part of TERM is the dependent variable? 3.What is a constant variable? 4.In what format do we write a hypothesis? 5.Bring BW (& jackrabbits lab if you took it home) and come get stamped 6.Start the yellow handout- research plan!!!!

Announcements Science Café Monday!

Today 1. Finish the (yellow) research proposal- due today @ 11:20 More detail = more likely to be approved by the HS science review committee! 2. Finish the front page of your science fair rough draft packet (finish today- otherwise HW) 3. Work on the outline for your next critter assignment (going to computer lab Tuesday to type up final draft, due next Thursday)

Critter Project (PreAP) Complete all 5 requirements (mixture of drawings & writing) Outline is useful to organize thoughts Check rubric to see how to score full points This weekend- finish outline Mon- rough draft in class (after science café) Tues- computer lab to type final draft & continue science fair Thurs- critter DUE
